Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

My Alpha4v4 program died. Can someone convert a database file made with Alpha4v4 so I can read it with Microsoft or Lotus?

    RE: conversion

Alpha 4 creates .dbf files. Most spreadsheet and database programs can easily import .dbf files, or, if you're using Lotus Approach, it can read the .dbf files directly. You may, however, have problems if your database contains memo fields.

      RE: conversion

The database in question has a .bck extension, I do not know why. I got it from someone else. When I try to change the extension to .dbf and run it with Excel or Lotus I get garbage. Alpha technical help tells me I have to make the conversion within the Alpha program but my Alpha program does not work.

        RE: conversion

I stayed with Alpha 4 through version 3, and next updated to Alpha 5. I don't find the .bck file extension in my version 3 documentation, but presume it is a backup file. If you post a request for help in the Alpha 4 forum on this site and explain that you need someone to turn your .bck file into a .dbf file, you may have better luck.

I believe the built-in backup utility in A4 created files with a .bck (or similar) extension. If that is what you've got, only the backup utility can read it.

            John:

Someone may help you if you go to the correct board.
This board is labeled "Code Archive." It is
designed to post CODE snippets and the like.

If you need help with A4, go to the A4 hyperlink. If you
post your message correctly, many will try to help.

            Good luck

              RE: conversion

              John.
Alpha4 does indeed use the .bck extension to signify it's backup copies.
A "Backup" is made from the A4 main menu, and can be "Restored" from there too.
Choose "Utilities", then "restOre". Follow the 'on screen' instructions.
If your A4 programme is damaged, you will need to find another A4 user to restore this backup for you.
You will then be able to read the data with a spreadsheet.
              Regards.
              Nick.

                Jonh.
I have A4v6.2 but, as this is a later version than the one you were using, it should work.
If you want to attach the .dbf file to an e-mail, you can send it to me at [email protected]
I'll restore it and e-mail it back.
                Regards.
                Nick.

                  Nick,
Thank you so much for your offer. Someone else also made the same offer and has restored my file and I can now read it perfectly. Thank you so much to all of you who have been so helpful. I am very grateful that I can now finally use the information in this database. You are a great group of people.
