Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Assistance Required

I have a problem installing A5V5. Please can someone help !!!

    RE: Assistance Required

You might get more responses and help if you describe the problem in slightly more detail.

Is your computer turned on? Are you getting an error message? At what point during the installation attempt does your difficulty appear?

What type of machine, how much memory, processor speed, etc?

      RE: Assistance Required

I posted full details of my problem on the main message board but I am not getting anywhere in my attempt to find a solution. Here is a summary of my problem which I have also passed to Alpha Support but they don't even know what a "System Restore Point" is in Windows XP.

      Try the following thread.

        RE: Assistance Required

You won't like my reply, I'm sure. I didn't recognize your post by name/reference the earlier post.

I had followed your thread on the main board and can offer no other advice. To restate the obvious....

Others have purchased and downloaded the home version to use on machines running XP. Yours seems to be the single case where the installation fails (aren't you the un/lucky one?).

It seems to be that there is something in your machine's setup that is conflicting with the Alpha installation.

Question. - Have you tried, assuming you have access, to install the home edition on another machine that is similarly configured?

Yes, I have it installed on both my home PC and my laptop and both behave in a similar manner.

Answer me a question or two, do you have 4 additional printer drivers installed permenantly, all to do with A5V5 ??? Would you mind sending me a copy of your install.log file then I can compare it to mine ???

Do you think PDF995 could be interferring with the installation ???

          Regards

            RE: Assistance Required

Attachment is install log plus screen shot of installed printers. I do not believe pdf995 is interfering as I have it installed as well.

Alpha "printers" appear as "RTF Driver", "HTML Driver", etc.

              RE: Assistance Required

Your install.log file doesn't look much different to mine. There is no mention of the installation of the printer drivers. Do you think it is possible to install these 4 drivers manually using the install files in the A5V5 directory ??? There appears to be only 3 install files, install_pdf, install_rtf & install. What is the 4th one called or does one of the other files install 2 drivers ???

              Regards

              Dave

                RE: Assistance Required

I would think they could be installed/reinstalled manually as there are programs in the Alpha root directory named install_pdf.exe, install_rtf.exe. There is another file install.exe of the same file size and modified date which is probably the html driver.

There are also files in the Alpha root directory - acfrtf.txt, acfpdf.txt, and acf.html.txt - which seem to be created/modified each day the first time Alpha is started.

Hope this is of some use.....

                  RE: Assistance Required

Didn't realize I was parroting your previous post for file names. Short answer is I can see no harm in running the install programs directly. One of them should create two "drivers".

When done you should see the printers in the printers folder and files

acfrtf.txt, acfpdf.txt, and acfhtml.txt in the Alpha program folder.

                    RE: Assistance Required

I have tried installing the printer drivers manually and they do install but only 1 printer driver each. They are later versions than Alpha5 seems to try and install. Even with these drivers installed I get the same scenario, 4 printer drivers installed and removed and 4 system restore points.

Do you know anyone in tech support, who is helpful, at Alpha Software ???

                    Regards

I've never had to deal with tech support so I don't have any contacts. You smight try Selwyn directly.
