Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    UK User Group

Is anyone else interested in a UK User Group ?

I believe that there are a number of benefits to having our own domestic forum, and although it will take some effort at the beginning, that effort will be repaid many fold in a short time.

So come on, don't be shy...

              Hi Gil,

              How are you.

I'm near Glasgow (about 2 - 3 hours comfortable driving to the NE (depending on the presence (or otherwise) of Traffic cars!

What do you do there, are you self employed or do you work for a software house?

Myself and my wife run a family opticians business - see www.lowvisionsupplies.co.uk.

I travel to Glasgow several times a year and I would go there for a user group meeting,

                  Thanks for getting back Gil,

Early days, but a couple of expressions of interest so far, so if it continues at this rate, definitely a hopeful sign!

I'll keep you abreast of progress and hopefully meet you in the not too distant future.

                  Thanks again,

                    RE: UK User Group

                    Tony,

I have been using Alpha Four/Five for a number of years and would be keen to develop a UK user group, training, forum and annual conference/event. I am based in Kent, approx. 20 mins from central London by train. Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. Perhaps it would be a good idea to setup an initial meeting of UK developers in a central UK location. I am happy to travel and would be prepared to offer some sponsorship to get this off the ground. Maybe we could get Richard, Selwyn or a representative from Alpha software to attend if we approach this right and demonstrate that we are just as keen in the UK as alpha developers are in the US!

                    Mike :-)

                      RE: UK User Group

I beleive the Apha needs to be pushed into the faces of Access/SQL Developers, they need to see what it offers and a UK support group can only help to support this.

I look forward to regional groups, or even a BCS (British Computer Society)(Database) forum for developers.

As you might know -- we are hard at work on the client server version which will allow Alpha Five to serve as a seamless "front end" to "back ends" such as Oracle, SQL server, MY SQL etc.

A lot of this will covered at the conference.. (along with the Alpha Five Web Server and further integration of email with Alpha Five)

                        conference information is at

I wouldn't describe myself as a developer - much too grand. But I am gradually building quite a sophisticated little application suite for our charity. I can use Xbasic - sort of - and I find the forum very helpful. I would happily come along to an event in London or SE. But being a poor padre, couldn't offer sponsorship!!

As a two day user of Alpha and not a techie I would be interested in a user group. I am based in Manchester and would have some problems travelling much further south than Birmingham.
