Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Backup Alpha4v6 data files to rewritable CD

Alpha4 is on a 486 / Windows 95/DOS 6 machine. I am planning to network to a PIII / Windows XP (SP2) machine so I can backup my dta files to rewritable CD. I saw Dave's note about the "Read Only" attribute. Am I likly to encounter any incompatabilities or other problems in doing this? Can I do it directly through the existing OS or will I need another program...if so, could anyone soggest a good one? (I have Roxio 5.1). Thanks for your help.

RE: Backup Alpha4v6 data files to rewritable CD

    Hi Tom,

I regularly "copy" the whole of my application (on Win98 system) to CD, then from CD to an XP machine and it works exactly as if it was on the Win98 machine. If I copy the other way (from XP to Cd then to Win98) I have to change the file attributes.

      Tom

I've found a simple way is to zip first, put the zip file on the cd, then unzip on the target machine.

I can always use that procedure and get good, easy results.

I'm sure that works, but I don't have a zip drive. Besides, I'd have to move files everytime I update, which is often (because I am still entering data). That's why I want to use a network to access the CD writer.

I conclude that since you are able to do this with zipping, there isn't a file compatability problem with the OS of the target CD?

          Thanks for your help, Al.

RE: Backup Alpha4v6 data files to rewritable CD

We seem to be talking past easch other here.

As I understand it, you want to transfer your files through the network to an XP machine with a CD burner so that you can burn a backup to a CD. If that's what you intend, there should be no problem other than the read-only flag. XP even has the capability of burning CD's built into the operating system, although it's fairly basic, it should do all that you want.

When Al talked about Zipping the files, he was talking about using something like WinZip or ZipGenius to create a compressed archive file (zip file) which would then be burned to the CD. There is no Zip disk or Zip drive involved in such a process. It's unfortunate that Iomega chose the Zip name for its drives because it's caused several people to confuse Iomega's disks and drives with the compressed file format of the same name. Storing the files as a zip file eliminates any issues with the read-only flag.

Is that any better, or have I misunderstood as well?

Thanks for taking the time for a lengthy response...I now feel confident I will be able to use the network for backing up to cd...and thanks also for clearifing the "zip" term...I'm aware of the difference, I just made the wrong assumption.
