Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with error message

I've been running an application developed by PLPro which is an accounting package for several years. Just recently when I print checks I get the message " File access denied".
This happens after the checks have printed and the program attempts to log the payments.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this and how I correct it?

    RE: Help with error message

    Hi Ken,
Have you by any chance copied/restored from a CD, if so, then the file attributes may be set to read only and will have to be removed. Another possibility, has he path changed where Alpha is looking for the data?

    Good Luck,
    Keith

      Keith,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have recently restored this file. Checked In Windows explorer and the properties are set to archieve for the script that triggers the posting operation following printing. not sure what read and archieve mean. Should all boxes in properties be unchecked?

        RE: Help with error message

        Hi Ken,

I've found that after a restore what works best for me is, close Alpha, go to DOS, change to the Alpha directory then type the command ATTRIB /S -R -A -S -H and press enter, now change to the directory where your application files are stored and repeat the process by typing the command ATTRIB /S -R -A -S -H and press enter, this removes all the attributes, close DOS and try runnin your application again.

        Good Luck,
        Keith

          RE: Help with error message

          Hi Keith,

Guess you climb one mountain and find another. Followed you advise on file attributes. This got me beyond the could not open file stage. My new problem is an error message "index does not match database file. Recreate index." I've restored the index files and reinstalled idn and ndx files I believe are ionvolved with this process. Still can't get beyond this point. Any ideas?

            Hi Ken,

You should have (I think) the option to rebuild the indices, if not you may have to re-create them.

              Keith,

Do you think it would be practical to restore the index files from my tape backup and then rebuild them in the various databases. Even though they are listed in the various databases when I attempted to rebuild it doesn't appear anything happened.

                Hi Ken,

If you can see all the indexes from within Alpha, try updating each of them. When you update indexes, don't choose ALL, select each indivudal index and update.

                Good Luck,
                Keith

                  RE: Help with error message

Ken: [Geeez somebody named Ken can't be all that bad - eh?]

For what it's worth... A long long time ago I read in an Alpha whatever that using the 'update idexes' may or may not rebuild them from scratch. Keith is right they all need to be refreshed.

Here's what that nebulous writing suggests.
Get an active cursor in the expression of each index; insert any character [not a space] and then back right over it with the 'backspace' key, leaving it as you found it. According to that writer, that action signals Alpha to rebuild the index from scratch again. I must admit that I've done it in desperation and then found something else that was the cause of the problem. It may work in your situation since you've been fooling with files and index movement. It can't hurt - is the main thing.

Try it. Let us know if it was successful.

                    Hello again

Sure appreciate the help everyone is providing--may get this application to work yet. Appears I've gotten beyond the index problem since I've now got a new error message" File not open". I sure don't have any idea what this could mean. Help! Is anyone familiar with the accounting package written by Plato Software Systems. it was called P&L Pro.
