    Default Data Export Utility?

    Hi,

    Is there an executable utility (preferably freeware) out there that can read an alpha four database and export it into some other format like dbf, delimited text, etc.?

    I have a friend with an old alpha four application who wants me to extract the data for a future project. I haven't seen the files yet.

    Thanks,

    Kim

    Kim,

    The data tables in Alpha Four are stored in .dbf format - no export is required. Just copy the table to whatever program reads .dbf and you are ready to go. If you want to get the Alpha Four data (.dbf file) into some other format, you could open the table in A4, click on Utilities, then Export data and select the format you want.

    If the 'future project' will be developed in Alpha Four V6, you are home free.

    Kim;
    You can open the Alpha 4 table in Excel or other spreadsheet programmes using the ".dbf" extension as Dave mentioned. However, if there are A4 "memo fields", you may not be able to open them.

    Good luck!

    It's very wasy to figure out if there is a/are memofield(s) in a table.

    You'll find the "tablename".dbf file for each table. In Alpha 4, if there is a memo field you'll also find a "tablename".dbt file.

    Or you can look at the structure of the table from within Alpha 4.

    Kim,

    Alpha4 .dbf files can be directly imported into Access XP Pro, for example, including the memo fields.

    I have done this with A4 v2.1 and the memo fields are directly imported in .dbf format without issue.
