Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4 V6 and Inkjet Printer

    We are trying to set up a new HP Business Inkjet 1100d, but when we try to print from Alpha, we get are having problems. Envelopes won't print, and the letter is followed by about 6 blank pages. Alpha Tech support thought it may be the printer codes, but HP had no idea what I was talking about when I asked them for these codes. Any ideas?? HP thought I should return our inkjet for a laserjet-that it may be more compatible, but I think they just wanted to get me off the phone. We're a small hospice group without a tech person.

    It sounds like you possibly have a printer compatability issue. A4V6 does not print well, if at all, to new Windows-only printers. I'd bet that you would get rid of the problem by upgrading to Version 8, which is much more user-friendly to the newer Windows printers.

      Elizabeth;
      It is true a new Laserjet (as long as it has parallel connection)would work seemlessly with A4v6. However, I have also been able to make inkjets perform well using some of the older HP Deskjet drivers that come with A4v6. Getting them to work in "typeset mode" is more of a challenge, though. What printer driver are you currently using and are you printing in "regular" or "typeset" mode?

        RE: A4 V6 and Inkjet Printer

        Hi Duncan

        Forgive me jumping in - I have just installed an Epson Stylus Color 980 (via a Netgear Print Server), to use with A4v8 in typeset mode.
        I have tried several of the drivers installed with A4v8, and although I can get the thing to print, the vertical position of the text on the page varies by up to an inch from the first to the second sheet. I only get that problem with A4, not with any Windows apps. There is an Epson Color driver in A4 but that doesn't improve matters.
        Which driver have you found to work well with inkjets?
        Regards
        Paul

          Hi Paul;
          Here at the office, while we normally use HP Laserjets with A4, occasionally for A4 with colour I use an older HP Officejet with which I use the "HP Deskjet 850C, 300 DPI" driver. At home I have an HP 940C Deskjet (I think), but I will have to check which driver I use. It is mid am here (I know you are across the pond), so I will have to post the driver I use with that machine tomorrow. How well the HP Deskjet drivers work with Epsons, I have no idea.

          By the way, even with the HP inkjets, I have to "tweak" the settings (margins etc.) a bit for proper typeset printing. Though I doubt it makes any difference, FYI I use Win 98 and have the print drivers set up on A4v6.

            Paul;
            On the home inkjet (HP 940C) I use the "HP Officejet" driver. It is very slow, but it works.

              RE: A4 V6 and Inkjet Printer

              I eventually discovered that my random vertical misalignment when printing on the Epson inkjet was due to using "Roman Proportional" font AND printing through a Netgear print server. Either one on its own did not cause the problem, but the combination of the two did.

              So I installed a couple of different proportional fonts from the Alpha Font Pack, then modified the report to use the new fonts, and now all is working as it should. (Reverting to the original configuration causes the problem to re-appear).

              I can only presume that the original font was corrupt, but I don't understand how that would cause erroneous printer control codes to be passed to the printer. Perhaps I should go for a lie down in a darkened room for a while...
