Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printer emulation - which

Currently I use an HP laserjet II/IIP emulation.
I need a new printer and was looking at the OKIdata 4200.

It says Standard emulations are PCL5e, PCL6, Epson FX (9pin), IBM Proprinter III XL.

I have no idea what the above implies except I remember the Epson FX from years ago.

How does PCL relate to the old standard we used for a long time, the HP II/IIP.

If the Okidata 4200 won't work, has anybody a suggestion? Currently the OL600e which has churned out pages for years has gone bad and it doesn't seen worth spending money to fix it when a new printer doesn't cost much more than the drum.

    RE: Printer emulation - which

    Steve;
I don't have a direct answer to your question, but a point for you to add to your considerations. In my experience, all the new HP lasers continue to work flawlessly on A4v6 (& v7)with the "old" HP drivers. So if an HP laser is on your list of potentials, let me assure you it will work well.

      RE: Printer emulation - which

When you create a printer driver in A4 (e.g. HP II/IIP), it contains the decimal coded initialization codes that the Printer Command Language of the printer interprets. You'll need to get the appropriate ones for the Okidata to make it work.

        Gedi,

I am not sure I understand what you are saying.
I currently use a NEC660plus and an OKIdata OL600e, each with a different computer. The printer configuration in Alpha is set to HP Laserjet II/IIP for each.

I was assuming that if I got a new printer the settings for the HP laserjet II/IIP is recognized by the system such that the new printer will operate like the old one did.

I just broke off to see how the manual for the OKi 600e mentioned the settings and it seems to have vanished.

        Any comments

I would think that you could do that.

            Hi Steve,

Just for your information, and to anyone else on this board:
PCL5e is the Printer Control Language V5e (enhanced) that is built into most HP laser printers these days, if not PCL6...

It is a SUPERSET of the old PCL3 that the old HP LaserJets, Jet II's (all models), and forward used..

Alpha4 only uses quite basic commands out of the set to control basic font pitch, font selection, pagination, page size, and a few other minor things... These commands are universal to ALL PCL(x) equipped printers, whether they be HP's or OKI's or NEC's or whoevers...

So feel free to get any printer you'd like.. If it supports PCL5 as an emulation, then it'll work flawlessly.. You won't have access to any of the advanced features that the printer may offer, but then again, you never did up to now anyways!! But everything that worked before will keep on working, and with a little bit of presetting of defaults inside the printer, you will be able to get it to come out the way you want (paper tray selection, duplexing if you have it, etc..).

            Good luck !!!
