Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    One-to-many

    Attached is our application.
I am attemption to replace field named ponumber with a table to create a one-to-meny link so multiple purchase orders, received from a customer, may be entered for any invoice.

The region has been placed on the form (form D of the chicken.set), but cannot enter purchase orders. For some reason the ordernum field of the orders.dbf is picked up.

Hope someone can tell me where I have gone wrong.

Some how the attachment didn't make it. Please try again. Remember the max size for an attachment to the message board is 1 mb.

I had zipped the file, but it was still over 1mg even though the data had been stripped. It's odd, I put the region on the form and the "ponum" field is automatically filled with the "ordernum" of the concurrent order.

I have checked the field rules in both the set and the dbf file and there are no rules constructed excpt the case rule.

The ponum dbf file contains two fields, ordernum and ponum. this dbf is attached to a set with a one-to-many link. It is the second region of the set.

You need to pack the tables to have the logically deleted records to be physically deleted. Then the zip will be much smaller.

Try rebuilding the set again under another name and see if you can get the linking values to be assigned properly.

          Al,

The data is stripped and packed, but the program itself is 24 megs.

I have tried your suggestion to redo the set with no luck.

Would it be possible to e-mail you directly with the program in zipped format?

With more fiddleing I have the 2nd region now placed on the form. However, when the region is in focus and trying to enter new purchase order numbers the message "cannot edit field" appears. How do I correct this condition?

If Al doesn't mind, I have some time now and can look at a e-mailed zipped version for you. What version of A4 are you using..

I have 3,4, and 6.22 in my machine.

                  RE: One-to-many

Al suggested a second database using the Purchase Order Number as the prime database in the set. It works just fine to find the numbers needed. Also, with trial and error we were able to put a second region on the main entry for recording the purchase order numbers.

We had thought there was some way to do all of this from the main entry form.

Thanks much for your interest. And, I hope you get busy soon.

That is exactly my situation, except I am in partnership with my daughter. She is a programmer with another full time job, so she cannot devote much time to these projects. And, Nancy is an enthusiastic Access user along with all of the associated languages. I have tried to get her interest in Alpha with no luck.

I doubt that she or any other Access programmer is interested in using a DOS system. You may want to show her Alpha 5 version 5. That's a more level playing field.
