Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 4 v.3 in Windows XP

According to another post in this forum, Alpha 4 v.3 CAN be run in Windows XP if something called "Intel Proset I or II" is removed from the computer.

I have some OLD data in Alpha 4 v.3. I do not need to print it or add to it or change it in any way, I just need to view it. Besides copying all of the files from my Windows 98 computer to my new Windows XP computer and removing the "Intel Proset I and/or II" what else do I need to do to get it running?

Also, does anybody know what Intel Proset is and what damage it does to remove it?

    Thanks for the help.

RE: Alpha 4 v.3 in Windows XP

if you do a google search you'll find that Intel Proset appears to have to do with networking. I don't think that's the extent of the problem running older versions on XP.

Older versions of A4 (prior to v7) seem to have problems when the database is reconfigured, or (if I remember correctly) sometimes when records are added. If all you're doing is viewing your records (and keep a backup somewhere), you may be able to get by.

RE: Alpha 4 v.3 in Windows XP

Thought I would let you know what I did with my Alpha4v3 program with my XP computer. I ended up buying a disk partition program "Boot Magic". I then loaded XP and ME operating systems onto different partitions of the drive. Each time I boot up my computer a screen is displayed asking which Operating System I want to load. I then loaded my Alpha4 program onto the ME partition so I was able to run it on my new computer. While this is not an ideal solution it has worked out fine for me. (If you want to run the XP portion of your hard drive you have to reboot to access the other partition.)

RE: Alpha 4 v.3 in Windows XP

I found that I could view the dbf files with Quick View Plus, a file viewing utility that came with WordPerfect Suite. I believe it is available separately. Quick View, apparently a more limited version is included with Windows 98 SE. While I could also view dbt files, they are not connected to the dbf records when viewed with Quick View Plus. In addition, use of a file viewer does not give one the power of Alpha Four with indexing, searching, sorting, etc.

A dual-boot installation is a more elegant solution. I also installed Windows 98 SE in a separate partition on the hard drive of a new computer with Windows XP Professional. Win XP comes with a multiboot loader that can handle booting into multiple partitions with multiple Microsoft operating systems. (I do not know if it will work with Linux. However, Linux comes with its own multiboot loader.) Installation was tricky and time consuming. If you desire help with this, let me know. I specifically installed Win 98 so that I could run Alpha Four and a legacy scanner.

While no third-party software is required to setup a multiboot arrangement, separate partitions are requied for each operating system. Using the DOS and Windows tools, it may be necessary to remove the existing installation and repartition the entire drive. A third-party utility may be able to create a new partition without destroying the existing partition. In either case, it is important to back up everything of value before adjusting or removing a partition, and to be prepared to reinstall all system and application software. Because it can be tricky and time consuming, it is wise to be prepared for a period of unavailability of the computer.
