Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Not enough handles" error message

I just installed my A4V6 on Windows XP, and I get the "not enough handles" message when I try to load a set.

I remember with Windows 98 I had to go somewhere and and type in "Files=99".

Can you tell me what I need to do with XP?

    Look at this message

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaphorum/read.php3?sortby=lastreply&direction=desc&num=9&id=985&thread=787

Be aware that a4v7 or 8 are the only versions of alpha 4 that are designed to work with XP or 2000

Structure changes done on XP or 2000 with a version before a4v7 can and will cause corruption.

      Al:

      Thanks for responding!

Does this mean the only way I can deal with the problem is to buy an upgrade to version 7 or 8?

I love Alpha 4 and have no desire to change to A5 or Access. Would you recommend going to Version 8?

Also, I live in Milwaukee; do you? Seems like I've seen your name connected with a user's group either here or in Chicago.

        Chuck

You should use version 7 or 8 on XP.

You'll also need to adjust the file number in those versions per the instructions that are in the link.

We're about to announce a Milwaukee/Wisconsin area user group meeting on Feb 25th at the Waukesha public library from 6:30 to 8:30

Please send an email directly to me, [email protected] about attending and whether I should put you on the email list.

        Hope to see you there.

          RE: A4v6

I have been using Alpha4 V6 on XP Pro without few problems. True, I am not changing the structure of any files. This I do on a 98 machine and then copy the files over. I do have the "Not enough file handles" problem with two sets which have a number of linked data bases. I have files=255 and I don't have problems with other sets. If I upgrade to V8, will this problem be fixed?

Did you change the config.nt file in the windows system32 directory?

No, I have not but from what I have read here that seems to be the solution. Do I change that through start|run and enter c:|windows|system|config.nt (substituting back slashes for the |)? BTW, config.nt has files=40.

                Just edit config.nt in notepad.

                  Ro All,

I had the same problem reinstalling a clients A4 copy on an XP machine. I changed config.nt and still had a problem. Yhere were TWO copies of config.nt in separate folders.

Had to search for the second one and then A4V6 was OK.

                    Paul:

Thanks for the tip. I have now installed A4v8 and with one set I still get a "not enough handles" message.

When you found the second config.nt did you delete the folder? Does it matter which one got deleted and which one got saved?

Go to your window explorer and do a search for config.* This file contains the path you used to see and change in windows 98.

                      Hope it helps.
