Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Broadcast E-Mails from DBF

We want to use Alpha Four v6 for our membership list with a field for e-mail addresses. Is there a program - DOS or Windows - which can read the DBF file and query on a field (such as Customer Status) to send an e-mail to them. I know of programs which can import data, but they adds an extra step.

    Thanks for any help.

    Alex,
I am not sure just what you want to do.

I email invoices to customers but it is a two step process.
I write the report to a file.
I then go into the email program and either attach the file, or open the file and "select all" and copy and paste it into the email.

I believe A5V5 has an email interface but I am not yet upto speed on that.

Thinking about a single letter to selected members, I assume you have the members email in a field. You create a "tag" field and tag those members that require the letter.

You create a report with just one field in it, the email address. You print to a file this report. Then copy this list (report) of email address into your email program.

Am I on the right track/

      RE: Broadcast E-Mails from DBF

I am looking to avoid the step of copying the e-mail address field to a file and copying into the e-mail program. That is because we have so many lectures, special events, etc. that it would get cumbersome to be copying the list. We also have a variety of membership categories... let's say public, member type 1, member type 2, member type 3. Some e-mails would go to all, some to types 1 & 2, some to 3 only, some to types 2 & 3.

We will probably end up going to Act! 2000 since they do allow e-mailing to pre-defined groups. On EBAY, you buy copies for less than $20.

        Alex,
        I don't see the chore.
Your database can define which group a member belongs to.
ie Member Group1 group 2 group 3 email
Fred yes no yes [email protected]
Jo no no yes [email protected]
        Search all members group3
PRINT REPORT FILE DEFAULT FILE Index SEARCH
        REPORT is:
        Email address.
Word pad Open File REPORT, SELECT ALL, COPY
Open email program and paste in address list.

It's not a chore for me. It's not a choir for you.
But, it could be a chore for a receptionist or an executive who wants to send an e-mail to all the Type 1s from within Outlook or some other program. *And* we're talking a thousand or so on recipients on some of these e-mails *and* AOL has some filters for e-mails with that many recipients.
