Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lock error Unlocking

I have recently upgraded an application I have developed that logs servicable parts and service dates.

The upgrade now provides full stock control and for the first time I have been using the one-to-one link in some sets.

This causes the error message "Lock error Un locking every time I change a record. If I delete the one-to-one link it goes away!!

I am currently running a peer-to-peer Win'98 network and all the user licences seem to be OK. It even gives me the error message when I am the only user on the network using the "server" pc.

The changes update quite normally when I press continue but as I want to market this application I need to solve this problem.

Can anybody help me please ?

    Thanks

    RE: Lock error Unlocking

I have recently been running into this same error. Like you, I find that the changes update when I press continue. Sometimes I have to press it twice. This is an app that I have been developing and using for years without a problem.

It didn't occur to me that this could have something to do with a network. I use A4 only on my laptop. My husband does not have it on his computer. We recently installed a router in our home to share our DSL line. At this point, we have not set up printer or file sharing, but I anticipate doing this in the near future. Is this likely to cause additional problems?

        RE: Lock error Unlocking

I get the error on both A4V6 and A4V7 but only on sets using the one to one link.

As regards printing across the network I have had no problems using Win'98 clients on either A4V6 or A4V7 and the error message goes away if you run A4 in single user mode.

Just a thought, are you saving the parent record before trying to enter a child?

            RE: Lock error Unlocking

The parent file is a header containing a field for client number and a field for referral number. The child files, clients and referrals, are linked one to one to the header. The set also contains several one to many grandchild files (client phones linked to clients, service hours linked to referrals, etc.)

I am using a single form, with tabbed subforms and regions, for data entry as well as for viewing current data and updating data. Normally, the parent and child records are entered at the same time, when the client is first referred. Initial data entry does not seem to cause the error. It is only when I update the data in the referral record or the client data record and press that the error appears.

            Thanks,
            Sherrill

The last sentence should have read "press F10 ..."

This is the same problem I'm having.

Initial data entry is fine. But when I update the entry e.g. when deliveribf stock in against an order the error occurs. The set that is being updated is very similar to yours in that it has a header record linked one-to-many to the order lines anes and each order line is linked one-to-one with its stock record to update the stock levels all of which are shown on a form.

In answer to Russ's question yes the parent record is saved it is only when I update the "grandchild" record in the set that the unlock error occurs

                  Yes I am.

The problem only occurs when I am changing a child record in a set which then updates a grandchild record using the posting rules via the one to one link.

To make matters worse to-day it has started to give me the same error on a set which had previously worked perfectly well.

                  Does this help?

                  Thanks
