Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: recover from ZAP

    Glenn,

I won't chide you for what you did because I have done my share over the years. With that said let me state that I have never tried to recover A4 files after a "zap." However, since you are using DOS V 6.xx the DOS version of Norton Utilities versions 6.xx or 7.xx may be of help. I don't know for sure but am assuming a "zap" deletes the files in the same manner DOS or Windows "delete" does. If I am in error maybe someone can post more exacting details of the Alpha "zap" process. I use Alpha 4 V 2.1 in Windows ME but have used it for more than 11 years in all operating system versions since then.

I would caution you not to add or delete any programs to you computer since they may overwrite any remnants of these files. I have these versions of Norton that I could FTP or attach as files to you if you feel so inclined. Aside from that I know of no other solutions.

I have checked "email notification" for this post in the event you are interested without posting my email address in an open forum so I can get back to you quickly. Of course you would need to post your email address for the files.

    Good luck,

    Dave McClain

        RE: recover from ZAP

        Dear Glenn:

There is one possible solution to this problem I have used successfully on a number of occasions, and it is referred to in some of the responses. Norton Utilities has an unzap command that can work in some circumstances. I think that the primary conditions are that you act immediately before you enter any more data, and that you have sufficient hard disk space available. When data is zapped and plenty of hard drive space is available it seems to remain contiguous and available. If your data is fragmented on the hard drive and if there is little contiguous space available the unzap will probably not work.

I have had large databases completely recover using this method. In other cases I recovered part of the database or nothing.

This is probably useful for your next zap.

            Re: recover from ZAP

You should immediately stop using the computer and get the software mentioned and loaded it on a bootable floppy.

A zap moves the end of file marker to the beginning of the file, so the zapped area becomes free space. Continued use of the computer may write other information in that area and make an unzap less likely to succeed.

Norton, dsalvage, or another tool may be able to help you. You need an unzap utility, not an undelete utility.

            Best of luck.
