Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Print to file ???

I have various reports which can be printed on my printer but I want to send this report to disk which can then be sent to someone (printer) who will take disk and print contents in book form.

When you tell Alpha to print - I know that you can "print to file" and you can then designate drive - like drive A for disk. This can only be saved in "printer file" format. Is this correct.

To make a long story short - how can I send report to floppy disk (1.44) so that comercil printer can use???

    Thank you

PS: If you want to call me collect 301-519-3345.

    Please help

    RE: Print to file ???

    Hi Paul,

I have several reports that I print to file. I normally name my files in the format "A:Filename.asc" it always works.

    Best of luck,
    Keith

      RE: Print to file ???

First, you need to set up a printer configuration with no printer codes. This is the one I use.

      P r i n t e r C o n f i g u r a t i o n

Description : Print to a File
      Printer left margin [0-40] : 0
      Top of form delay [0-99] : 0
      ------------------------------ Printer Port ----------------
      Printer port : LPT1:

      Page Advance by : Linefeed
      Lines per page [1-99] : 60
      ------------------------------ Printer Initialization ----
      Set-up codes :
      Close-out codes :
      ------------------------------ Print Styles --------------
      Normal codes :
      Bold codes :
      Italic codes :
      Uline on codes :
      Uline off codes :
      ------------------------------ Print Density --------------
      Compressed on :
      Compressed off :

Now, when you want to print to a file, select this printer. It works just fine.

        RE: Print to file ???

        Paul:

If the files are 'Typeset' I think you're in for a real problem. If they are not, I've had success opening them in either MS Word or Wordpad and then saving them in THAT format - 'Doc'. Sometimes a few unwanted formatting characters show up but can be quickly edited out.

Yes, you're right when you say Alpha's print to file is its own format and cannot be changed as far as I know.

I'm at Northwestern Indiana 219-785-2048. Glad to help with my limited experience.

          RE: Print to file ???

Check with the person who is doing the printing for you. Ask if he can handle a file in DBF format (many commercial printers can do this). If he can, just copy a file to the A: drive. The file you copy can be of your entire database or of a Search/Sort list of only those records you want him to have.

The file can contain only those fields that the printer requires - or you can copy all fileds and let the printer select the ones he needs.
