Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4v2 to A5v4.5

As advised, I made new new A5 database. I put my A4 .DBF's in a new folder named DBT and added them to my new A5 one at a time and they went OK. Then I did same with the DBT's in a new folder called named DBT but they will not copy to the new database. I use the same method, one at a time, but when I try to open the memo files, the thing locks up and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help. I have Win 98se. Chris

why the Texas two step? Did you add .dbf files to the A5 database that contained memo fields before you had copied the associated .dbt files into your new directory? If so, that may be your problem.

Start over and make sure that you copy both the .dbf and .dbt files into the new directory, then add the .dbf "tables" to your A5 database and the memo fields should automatically be brought right along. There is no separate step to add them.

      RE: A4v2 to A5v4.5

Paul, thanks for the quick reply. I created a new blank A5 database. The only things I added were the .dbt's. Should I have included memo fields in the new database? I did not see that step. I can open the old dbt's I copied to the new one that apparently contained no memo fields. However when I click on the ones that do, I see "unable to open memo file or memo file does not exist". Do I need to add memo fields in the new A5 database before it will accept the .dbt's? How? Thanks, Chris

I presume you've created a new folder for your A5 work. Copy your .dbf and .dbt files into that folder.

When you fire up A5, you need to create a "database", then you can add your "tables" (what A4 calls databases, the .dbf files). If you add the .dbf "tables" to your database and the .dbt files are in the same folder, A5 should find and use them without you having to do anything else. You don't have to do anything except make sure that the .dbt files are in the correct folder with the .dbf files when you add the .dbf files to your A5 database.

From your initial explanation of the problem, I got the impression that you had moved your .dbf files, added them to your A5 database, and then moved the .dbt files and tried to get A5 to use them. That won't work.
