Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    WinXP and A4 v2

Does anyone have this combination working? I have single user version and can't seem to get it working now - get LAN ERROR: adapter malfunction every time I try to start A4.

    Joe:

Here's what alpha Says about Windows 2K and WinXP

"... As a result, Alpha Four Version 6 (and previous versions of Alpha Four) are not compatible with Windows 2000, and XP. Running Alpha Four V6 on these operating systems will corrupt your data. Alpha Four version 7 has been designed to work with all versions of Windows including Windows 2000 and Windows XP, ensuring stable, consistent performance, with no data loss!"

Read this on the Alpha home page; A4v7 'More Info' button.

They should know and a bunch of people on this board are having similar random problems with win2K and Xp as noted on this board.

MIght be time to Upgrade - I did - and it's not worth the hassle to go any other way.

      RE: WinXP and A4 v2

I stumbled across a workaround by accident. I had this working when I first installed XP, now I figured out what caused it to stop working, but I'm not sure why. When I unplugged the LAN cable which was connected to another computer XP tells me a network cable is unplugged and from that point on, A4 gives me the LAN error: adapter malfunction. But I found that plugging it back in to another computer let A4 load without the lan error. Taking out the network card altogether didn't help. It does seem to work like it did in Windows 98 now. But I don't want the data corruption - I am curious as to what operations will cause data corruption.

        RE: WinXP and A4 v2

        Joe,

My guess is that printdump.exe (which runs when Alpha Four vers. 7 is loaded using a4.bat) interrogates the Windows printers folder to find out what printers are installed on your workstation. If some of those are network printers I suppose printdump goes out on the network to interrogate them in order to assemble the information it needs to be able to use them in your application. If you're disconnected from the network when printdump attempts this I should expect XP to report that the LAN adapter card is not working.

Here's another guess. If you won't be using network printers, you could probably solve your problem by deleting the installed network printers from the local workstation's printers folder. (Retain the local printer, of course). I would expect Alpha Four to start up just fine then, whether connected to the network or not.
