Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Richard Rabins:

Thank You, thank You, for the confimation RE:Alpha4V7.

As you can see by this thread's messages, we've had to develop and rely on rather nebulous sources, principally in the food delivery business. It's good to hear from someone who knows for sure.

Please excuse this humble writer's fun comments if they offended any of you guys.

This is the best news about Alpha Software I've heard yet. After tinkering for 2 years with Alpha Five, I still have not been able to convert over to A5V4. Alpha Four is a great piece of work that is easy to use and I'm glad to see that it won't get left behind as Microsoft moves on.

I think that it is a MASTER STROKE to contemporize ALPHA 4
          to the new Windows environments.

By creating this upgrade Alpha has demonstrated a lot of
respect for the value of code previously created by its customers.

I look forward to purchasing the upgrade when available.

best regards & cudos to the genius who had this idea.....

I think this is the greatest news. Maybe Mr. Rabbins can tell us some of the new features? If I had a wish list, #1 would be the ability to fax from within the program as if printing a letter.

I'm sure we all have some things we would like to see, and pay good money for.

I have my credit card waiting. I think the powers to be at alpha will be wondering why they had not done this a long time ago.

            Regards to all,

            Rick

Guys: I finally worked into A5 and it is indeed awesome and quite functional tho those screens don't 'POP' like good ole DOS. None of us A4 guys have seen screens jump - draw slowly or blink in the process. A5 sort of does a 'screenfreeze' while good ole A4 REALLY FREEZES IT. I go to the computer area of my local bank and the stuff that they're not in a hurry for is programmed in Windows and the quick, international, networked stuff continues to be DOS.

I feel that DOS is definitly not dead an abandoning this excellent A4 program was criminal.

Let me give you an example....... I watched a gal HAMMER an app that I wrote. With keys only she pressed 'I' at the menu; then typed, hit enter, typed, hit enter, etc. She was so fast that Alpha had stored possibly 50 characters and two or three carriage returns before the screen was even visible. YOU CAN'T DO THAT IN A GRAPHICS ENVIRONMENT.

Hats off to Selwyn, Richard, et al for giving life again to this F A N T A S T I C device. I too, have my CC waiting and hope to be first in line.

                  Mike and All:

I have it on good authority that V7 is to be released TODAY. Don't care what the 'improvements' over V6 are. I have faith that the Alpha guys read these threads and KNOW what's needed and I'll just bet that they've covered nearly all of the shortcomings, i.e. printer, windows versions, etc.

I'm so sure with such faith that I've ordered - sight unseen; with NO sales hype of features and benefits. I can't wait to see what these clever people have done to this great program. I'm standing by my mailbox as we speak.

It's true! It's true! It's true! I just got off the phone with Alpha from ordering a copy. (Customer service said it addresses Windows/XP issues and printer driver problems!) O joy ... O joy.

ONLY supposed to be two differences...

                      1) Allows A4 to run under XP.
                      2) Allows use of windows drivers.

Those are the only difference as reported to me.
                      Thank you,

                        RE: Alpha Four version 7

Here's how I heard it from the most reliable source there is at Alpha Software. This is verbatim:

                        1. Designed to work with windows xp and windows 2000.

                        2. Ability to use the windows printer drivers for printing mono spaced fonts (all printer issues should now effectively be a thing of the past).

                        3. Improved stability.

It's the third item, improved stability, that I'm most interested in seeing. Most if not all of us have run into the crashes that seem to appear for no reason at unpredictable times, and the fix is often to reconstruct a field rules file, or form, or something. If A4V7 succeeds in resisting those problems, it will certainly be worth the price of admission.
