Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Loading A4 on Windows ME

    I have a friend with a 10 year old version of A4 on a 3 year old 333MHZ computer running Win 95.
He uses A4 for his business and a couple of weeks ago his computer went down the tubes. Fortunately he has a backup of his hard drive on a RW-CD so he has the program and data.
He just bought a new HP computer with a CD-RW and Windows ME.
    My question is:
Can Alpha 4 be loaded on a hard drive with Windows ME using the original floppy disks? If so, can he then drag and drop all his A4 data?

    John:

I've done a lot of trial and error and have a solution. No you can't install Alpha on M.E. from the original disks as they are. Please search this board using the search words...

"To All: A4 install on M.E." be sure to enclose in the quotes. Or click 'next 40' below on the board. Then look for my post - Ken Herrold. "To All: ..."

If you follow those instructions I think you can do it. Of Course the best way is to zip the the Alpha program files from the old machine to the new one, if you can.

E-Mail me if you have further problems. [email protected]

      Me again....

I re-read the note and see that he has both the PROGRAM and DATA files on a CD-RW. G R E A T!

Copy those to the new machine's hard drive in proper folders as they were on the previous. Remember that CD recorded files are always all marked 'R' [read only attribute] and this must be cleared on all of them once they're on the new drive. Just log on to the directory for each in DOS -- the command is ATTRIB *.* -r /s the '/s' assures that subdirectory files in each of these will also be cleared. You can also 'select all' in Windows Explorer and uncheck 'read only'.

Do the MS Config statement about the 'PERV' and you're on your way.

RE: Loading A4 on Windows ME

        Ken,

I believe A4 V2.0 and V2.1 can be installed from their disks on Windows ME. The problem occurs when later versions search for the share.exe file during installation.

At least this is how I installed it. Of course I am now doing the same as John:
copy the whole program including data just as it exists on the hard drive to CD-RW and your troubles are minimal.

That's good information. I somehow skipped A4v2 in my experience. Thought I has been in the Alpha business since then - I must have started with Ver 3

RE: Loading A4 on Windows ME

I currently have a A4 v6 version on my old Win 98 PC. I copied the whole program including data just as it exists on my C drive to CD-R and copied to my new ME machine. I have the master of A4 installed on my network drive K:
I believe we use to run "User.exe" to create a directory on my local drive. I have attrib'd the files on C: and did the PERVMFILES=150 in the msconfig. When I run my A4.bat file:
            rem O OFF
            CDALPHA4V6
            CALL A4 -N#K:APPSALPHA4V6 -D#K:APPSALPHA4V6SCRIPTS
            CD

all it does is run thru back to the C prompt
            any thoughts?

Just wanted to also note that I have edited the setup program as documented in the "Install on M.E.doc" and Setup ran without a hitch. Still when I click on my A$ shortcut the windows screen just pops right back and as if it was a dummy shortcut
Are there any special a4 shorcut properties I should have set?

RE: Loading A4 on Windows ME

                To Dan:

                "......
                rem O OFF
                CDALPHA4V6
                CALL A4 -N#K:APPSALPHA4V6 -D#K:APPSALPHA4V6SCRIPTS
                CD...."

Dan you say that you have the entire Alpha program and app files installed on the network drive, 'K'? Your batch file references 'C' [this would be default unless you change it]for all three line commands.

The prudent way would be to have the Alpha PROGRAM files on 'C' and the data and app references on 'K'. The pointer to A4.net won't work the way you have it - it is in the program directory.

These are some thoughts - I really never set up my networks like yours apparently. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm also not familiar with ME other than some of the favorite DOS commands have been left off. Is there a 'Subst' file in your windows-command folder?

Oh, and if there is a dos screen available in ME, get to it; log on to the alpha program directory and try you batch file line by line and see what's producing the error that moves it all back to the desktop.

The way it was setup was data files and apps are on the K: drive and program files are on c: the bat file I am using is the same one I have used for 3 to 4 yrs on win95 and 98. it appears to be ignoring the call statement all together. Frustrating

                    Dan:

What is the name of this startup batch file you've shown? If you've named it 'A4.bat' you've overwritten the one Alpha provided and you'd be calling that batch from the batch you're executing - can't do that. See if you have 'Alpha.exe'in the program directory. Substitute 'Alpha' for the 'A4' in your batch and it should work.

Once you get alpha to open, navigate if you have to to the app directory and startup and open the app. The A4.dfl will hold that path for the next opening.

Let me know how you do.

Forget 'call' on that line, just use the 'Alpha' as I've suggested. It would be Alpha -N#[bla bla bla]
