Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha4v6 No Mappings

My MIS Manager who is not familiar with Alpha decided he would change the Field Length to one of my Receiving Forms. In so doing, he lost all my mappings, field rules and calculated Field rules in the process. At least I still have my indexes!

So, how do I get my mappings and field rules back? Obviously I am not an Alpha Guru either (I am new to this job).
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

    Camile:

The 'mappings' error results from a lookup. It might be a customer, zip code or whatever. When a field length is changed these can be buggered.

View the form in question and press F3 - read in the upper corner the name of the db or set involved - then press [Esc] to get out of that. Press ALT-F10 enough times to get to the Alpha 4 Main Menu.

Now check the loaded db at the top of this screen to be sure you're in the right one. Press 'D' [database/set, etc] "F' [field rules] and then 'C' [change/edit field rules] using the Down arrow, scroll down while watching the right side of the upper part of the screen for the word "lookup". Stop there and press [F7] Mapping. Select the fields to map on the left and the 'fills' on the right. When you're done, F10 to save and you're on your way to the next one where you do the same.

    Good luck

If you can't figure all this out, zip me the app and I'll fool with it for you.

      I will try this.
However, if I change my field length back, will the mappings be reinstated?
Or do I absolutley have to re-map my field rules?

      I appreciate your help.
      Thank you,

        Camile:

Everytime I've changed any of the fields BEFORE on that has been mapped I've had to re-map. We don't know how the code in alpha processes these lookup lists but it seems to 'jog' the whole list fo fields and mappings each time a field is either added or changed in some way.

It looks as though you'd better change the mappings. I would guess that the damage has already been done and reversing what you did to cause it - i.e. lengthening the field - will only create a new 'mapping' problem when that field is put back to its original size.

If you would like, I could send a few screen shots of how to do this - maybe that'll get you thru if you can't find the manual.

          Ken,

I used your advice. It took some time and some courage (because I am not very experienced and our database seems a little shakey) but I finally have everything re-mapped in my Receiving database--THANKS TO YOU.
The MIS Manager seemed a little impressed but not much (he wants to transfer to Microsoft Access)--he doesn't like Alpha and has no desire to learn it.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!

Glad to see that you're up and running.

Too bad that your MIS mgr is stuck on Access. If he knew Alpha better he machine-gun Access -- especially when he had to change any of the code.

For instance, this re-mapping problem could have been handled by changing 1 file - then deploy that file to several instances/users and the problem would be fixed. The 'file' in Access is the WHOLE Application and ALL of its dbs and tables. Pretty difficult to 'pare' out one phase and fix it.

              Ken,

You have been a TREMENDOUS help.

I have another question for you. In our Customer Portfolio Database, we have lost the indexes (another great deed of my MIS manager--who now more than ever is hell-bent on Access). I know that what I have to do is attach the indexes back to the database. However, the Alpha Four Book says that the correct indexes have to be with the right database (which makes sense).

If I have more than 1 database and a list of many indexes,(which I do), how can I tell which index goes directly to my Customer Portfolio database?

              I appreciate your help.

                Camille:

In the future, establish and use standards in naming and describing your indexes.

For example: In your Customer Portfolio database, the name of all indexes mightr begin with CP- followed by up to 5 unique characters. In addition, when you describe the databases, the description should be: CP-xxxxx - Customer Portfolio By (whatever the fields are), where xxxxx is replaced by the remainder of the indexes name. Substitute the name of the database for the "Customer Portfolio" in the description.

This way, if the indexes ever get detached, in the Index Attach command sequence, all indexes (attached and unattached) will indicate what database they belong to.

It takes very little effort to establish and adhere to standards such as these, but in the long run, that effort is well worth it.

There's a mistake in the second line of the second paagraph of my previous posting. The word "databases" should be replaced by "indexes". Sorry about that.

                    Thanks for the future advice.
Unfortunately, it does not help my current predicament.

                      Camille,

It looks like you will have to go to the main menu, select Index, then Update.

If your lucky, whomever designed the indexes provided enough information that will allow you to determine which indexes belong to which database.

When I select Index, Attach an Index; pressing the key "F8" allows you to see to which database the indexes are attached to. I would be looking for indexes that are unattached.

Go back to the update screen and see if that one looks like if belongs to the database your having trouble with.

People are afraid of what they don't understand. While Access is the latest and greatest, Alpha 4 is an extremely powerful program that requires no programing knowledge to do some really exciting things.
