Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: File Handles In Windows ME

For those who want to run Alpha4 Version 6
applications in Windows ME all you have to do
is the following to set up your file handles:

    Click Start
    Click Run
    Type "MSCONFIG"
    Click OK
    Click on System Ini
    Click on 386Enh
Add the following line and save the file

    "PerVMFiles= I used the number 150
and my applications are running fine!

Give some feedback if this helped you!

I also want to thank you for this suggestion. I transferred my database to my new laptop running Windows ME last week after making the changes you listed. So far everything is working perfectly (furiously knocking on wood!) Eventually I plan to convert everything over to A5, but I have put off climbing up the learning curve since A4v6 works so well. The promised ability of A5v5 to print a report to an email-able file may finally tip the scales.

            Mike,

Thanks for the fix. I had just transfered my files from an older computer running Windows 98 to a new one with Windows ME and got the file handle error. I spent a couple hours messing with my config.sys file but to no avail. I thought I would try the phorum for the first time and was glad to see your response. I did exactly what you said and when I started A4 and opened my sets it worked fine.

Thanks again. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Where in the world did you get your information for this fix? God only knows how long it would have taken us all to find it on the MS site!

              Thank you Thank you.

                    More on thread 5236

I posted the above, thinking that Michael Champion's source of information -which works quite well- would be something he might wish to share with us all.

He did not reply on this board, so I sent a personal e-mail.

                    He replied........

"Can't reveal all my secrets!! If you have any other questions or problems just give me a yell...."

We should all be EXTREMELY GRATEFUL to Michael for sharing this one thing with us all and, of course, protecting his 'sources'.
