Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

          Anne,

I have used Alpha4 voluntarily at home for 11 years. Have looked at Access, learned it and was NOT impressed. The facts stated regarding Filemaker are accurate too.

Keep in mind I am my own boss and if and when your tech people force a change on you (if they have that authority) you will have no choice. You will be learned a Windows based database.

Thanks to some of the folks here on the Alpha4 forum I have installed V2.1 on a new Dell Pentium 3 with Windows ME without a hitch and never looked back. Be advised that there are very reliable rumors that the next version of Windows will not support DOS programs in any way so the writing is on the wall as far as corporate use is concerned.

So, if you have a choice I can assure you Alpha4 V2.1 runs very nicely with Windows ME and your version 2.0 should not be a problem either. There is no reason for you to upgrade to a later version of Alpha4 operationally if your V2.0 does what you want. I cannot verify the problems claimed with Windows 2000.

            Sam-

I was having the same problems you were having with the shortened screen and I followed Tom Sosnoski's idea, but using a different access to the screen size and got a full screen. I opened A4V3 and got the small screen. I hit "Alt-Enter" to make a window of the app. I right clicked on the blue band across the top of the window and got a menu. I opened layout and adjusted both buffer and screen size to W80 and H25 and Voila!!! I got the full screen.

            Thanks to one and all!

I have been running A4V6 on Windows 2000 Professional computer on a Windows 98 network. The server is running Windows 98, the new client is Win 2000- for about 6 months now with no reliability problems (screen colors not as true, can't set up a control key combination to start, but switching is ok). I recently saw the warning that this will corrupt your data, but with this arrangement no problems with daily use of 3 sets and the full complement of loaded databases- 3 computers sharing information, daily backup of the main set on hard and floppy disk. The other notebook computer is a 486 running Win95- it's all good.

                Anne,

If I was told right, They almost did not put a dos thread in WindowsXP. Several versions in Beta testing would not run a dos app at all. The final version dos have a dos thread to run apps like alpha4.

I moved to the windows version with a5v1 and wish I had waited for version 4.

You will have a learning curve no matter where you move to and I suggest you move to Windows ASAP. You will have a learning curve if you move to a4v7 and still will face A5 the next time. I consider that extra work.

                Dave
