Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Space should not be a problem. There is 2 GIG or more available. I'm getting this same message on three different computers. I even tryed installing it on an older computer with DOS 6.2 but had the same problem. After installing the program and then trying to load it, I keep getting the same message that Alpha4.exe is not a Watcom Program. The program does not load. Thanks for any help you can offer.

        Hi Larry

It sounds like the disks may be bad. If you can
give me the Serial Number off the disk, I'll mail
        you another set.

RE: alpha4 not a watcom program

          Hello,

The error message you are receiving is exactly what I received when one of my disks were bad. Alpha customer support/sales was very very helpful and mailed me another copy of disk1. After using the new disk1 (and I make several backups for safety reasons) Alpha.exe was able to load correctly without the WATCOM errors.

Hope this helps, but I would start with getting a newer copy of Disk1.

            Hi Carol
The disks may be bad but I have two original installation disks plus a backup copy that I tried to install with and got the same results. The full error message is "DOS/4GW Professional fatal error : C:ALPHA4V6ALPHA.EXE is not a WATCOM program". Serial Number is A6OUGPD1-2001204.

RE: alpha4 not a watcom program

I have found the easiest way to prevent these kind of errors is to put a directory on our server holding both the runtime (which we use) and the full program. If I have to set up a new computer I just install windows, get on the network and copy the complete directory. Takes about 20 seconds for a full install (try that with a windows program). The copy of the full program is useful if I have to do something for some reason on a client machine. I can copy the full program, do what I have to and erase it. Its all in one directory so this is easy.
Speaking of this, it would be great if A5 was written so everything was in one directory, including the necessary windows dll's etc. so this type of thing could be done.

RE: alpha4 not a watcom program

Consider getting rid of the Watcom DOS extender (DOS/4GW) and replacing it with PMODE/W. See:

                Hope this helps.

                  To all who replied:
Alpha Software was kind enough to send me new disks which solved my problem. Though I had backup disks, which were apparently also bad, I was in a state of denial that this could be my problem. It was, and some fine service from Carol at Alpha Software did the trick.
