Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Label Printers

    Has anyone successfully used something like a Smart Label/Dymo Labelwriter using Alpha4V6? I need to be able to print small size labels with a bar code and other info on them. I know I need to use typeset which is fine but I also need to use a label printer with a small desk footprint!
    Any help would be appreciated!

    RE: Label Printers

    Nancy:
    Dymo Label PRinters come with software, "Addressmate" and that program can read Alpha's DBF databases.

    I did it so long ago that I can't remember for sure, but I know that Address Mate can either read Alpha directly or import Alpha's DBF format.

    Our client is using alpha's DBF and then labeling out of the Dymo program. I think that's about as good as it is going to get. Don't believe Alpha would be able to run that printer - never even tried.

    If this information doesn't get it off the ground, get back to me a [email protected] and I'll look into exactly what we did.

      More thoughts Nancy:

      I recall and have confirmed that the Dymo Label printer uses a SERIAL port and DOES NOT accept dos printer commands. With that in mind, it is highly unlikely that any printing can be done directly from Alpha. Alpha's printer configuration prints only thru LPT ports.

      If you're familiar with the Windows Batch command 'Start' you could Open Address Mate from Alpha; run the label machine; and then return to Alpha - all with dos/windows batch commands. I frequently use buttons on forms to open windows apps. I.E.

      Batch File.... Call it Address.bat and start it in alpha with a script using {EXEC,"Address.bat",0,0}

      rem This will open Address Mate and place Alpha on the taskbar, minimized
      Address.bat
      ===========
      START C:[ADDRESS MATE'S PATH][EXECUTABLE.EXE]

      When your user is done making the label(s) he can close address mate and maximize Alpha from the taskbar, returning where he left it.

      Just somemore thoughts on your problem.

        RE: Label Printers

        I have either misunderstood something in the preceding note or I must take exception to the statement that you can't print to a serial port using Alpha 4. I have been printing labels on an old serial printer with Alpha 4 under DOS, under WFWG 3.11, and under WIN 98 SE. It's very simple and reliable.

          Thanks for your help. I have printed out both your repsonses and will try them out and yell for help once I have played with it. I have been struggling to get a small size label printer to work easily under Alpha 4 for over year and you are the first person who has actually given me hope!

            Allen:

            Should have re-phrased 'You can print to a serial port' guess you can, and I've learned something here,I guess.

            The problem with the Dymo Label Printer is that it is thermo and prints ONLY in graphics mode. I'll bet that you can't find a printer driver in alpha's list that will run it and I'll be that Dymo can't furnish a dos driver either.
            Been there and done that.

            Frankly, with that printer, I don't think that Alpha could run it with a chainsaw!

            I stand corrected.
