Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Transferring to Alpha5

We would like to "Upgrade" from Alpha4V6 to a windows format of Alpha5. The question is, how much information can be transferred from Alpha4 to Alpha5? We have 12 sets and 47 databases, any number of reports, forms, searches, etc. Would this have to be recreated?

    Please Help!

    RE: Transferring to Alpha5

    Hi Pamela

No JOY! You can only port your raw data i.e. *.db* to A5. Everything else has to be recreated. That means indexe's, forms, reports, etc...PLUS any scripts!

There are many strong opinions about the effort of moving to A5. It's either the greatest thing since sliced bread or to complictated and not enough automation, i.e. script recorder is not as fully functional as in A4.

Myself, I am making the move. My opionion for what its worth is that A5's main problem for long time users of A4 is the time it will take to recreate some very mature APPS.

Also if your very proficient with A4, A5 can be very frustrating as you learn an entirely new way of thinking and programming. It just drives you crazy when you are trying to do something in A5 that is taking forever but you could do in A4 in no time at all. Not because A5 is not able to do what A4 can do but becuase A5 is so much more powerful and learning the concepts in X-Basic slows you down.

    Hope this helps

      I second Robert's words.

I will also add that the more I use A5 the more I like it. The printed output is "much" better and I find that I can do many things in A5 that I could not even figure out in A4. If I had the time to work on it, I'm sure everything that we use in A4 would already be in A5.

        RE: Transferring to Alpha5

Get A5 and work some small (non critical) projects with it to find out how it works. Do not try to port your big application as your first project and don't try to do it under deadline.

Once you have figured out the A5 way of doing things with smaller projects, you should be able to plan your transition better.
