Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 2000 Alert!!!!!

Users need to be aware that Alpha4v6 does not function properly under Windows 2000.
If you make no changes to field sizes, and do not add or delete any fields Alpha4 will work fine.
However, if you add any fields, delete any fields, etc the database will be trashed.
After spending nearly 40hrs trying every conceivable setting, including Autoexec.NT and Config.NT I called Microsoft.
They admitted they have changed the working model for 16bit Apps.
I worked with their senior tech reps but could not find any workable solution.
They did tell me they are receiving thousands of calls about 16bit apps not working correctly.
They told me their engineers would work with AlphaSoftware to help them change the program to work with Windows 2000.
If anyone from AlphaSoftware tech support reads this board we would appreciate these changes being made.

    RE: Windows 2000 Alert!!!!!

Gary, if this was 4 years ago, there may be a chance that alpha would consider this. I really shouldn't be speaking for Alpha, however they've layed their eggs in the Alpha Fiver Version 5 basket.

About a year and a half ago somebody posted this question, and it was "supposedly" from and Alpha employee. "'If' alpha decided to do a version 7, please post some suggestions so we can see what kind of response there is to know if it would be worth our time."

Whew, what an uproar that caused. We were all exstatic at the possibility that there'd be a version 7. Well, in the end the answer was. Developement of A4 is no more and the will not be a version 7.

So, it looks to me that Slick Willy Gates has created a way to kill "dos" so everybody will have to goto windows apps.

      Welllll!!!!
Another real good reason to NOT go to Windows 2000.

Guess I'll just stick with win98 ... and good 'ole ASlpha4.

        Ha...as an adder.

I just bought a Dell Precision workstation. When I ordered it, the Dell salesperson could not believe that I wanted it with Win98. They tried talking me into WinNT or Win2K. They almost wouldn't take the order until I talked with their network specialist.

While I'm not bashing WinNT, I simply know nothing about it and figured I'd wait till the smoke cleared from Win2K before considering that. I have no problems networking Win98, so for now I'm sticking with it.

Where do you get this is a 16 BIT program??? Look on Page 1-5 under program requirements. The first line under under Processor. It plainly states ALPHA 4 Ver. Ver. 4 & Higher is a 32 bit program, it will NOT run on older 8088 or 80286 machines.

            Ken:

            OK, so whats your point.

Microsoft told me they also changed the 32bit Working Model.

Either way, it does not work properly under 2000.

Don't believe me? try it yourself.

              RE: Windows 2000 Alert!!!!!

              Hi Richard:

The only reason I changed to Windows2000 is I built a dual processor Machine.

2000 is really NT5 and it recognizes the 2 processors.

I tried to load NT4.0 but the machine and all its parts are too new and there were no drivers available.

              Alpha4v6 works fine with NT4.0

                Ken,

I may be wrong, but this is what I've heard...

Alpha Four "is" a 16-bit program running on a 32-bit extender program, to allow it to make better use of memory. The program itself is not actually 32 bit.

When you load Alpha Four, do you see a company name called Rational Systems? They're the company that supplied the 32-bit extender.

I'll inquire about this and post what I learn.

                  RE: Windows 2000 Alert!!!!!

                  To All:

The Rational Systems DOS extender is an x286 DOS extender (Before Pentium, 486 and 386, there were 286's :-) They chose that one rather than the PharLap DOS extender which was strictly 386 and up so they could run on many of 286 systems installed at the time (These are now paperweights for most people).

The x286 DOS extender is most accurately called a 16 bit application that uses 286 protected mode, not 386 protected mode.

As to Microsoft not supporting a 100% backward compatibility, I'd say if there was a good reason not to (e.g. performance), then that would be a valid argument. However, I believe because of the history of NT, they never cared about doing a good backward's compatible DOS capability, just adequate.

If on the other hand, they don't support it well because it forces you to move to THEIR applications that work well in THEIR operating systems, then you know why they find themselves in an anti-trust suit. I honestly believe that they probably

                  1. Put in OS hooks that only their application groups knew about
                  2. Examined other people's software and concepts under te pretense of purchasing rights to them, then reniged and developed their own
                  3. Made sure that certain programs would not work without major revisions to force other companies to constantly regroup
                  4. Gave away some software to effectively dominate the market for later
                  5. Forced manufacturer's to have exclusive bundles to preclude other OS's and Apps. This is also why you can never buy a full install (just upgrades) except as a manufacturer. If you could install it yourself, they couldn't make you buy their apps.
                  6. Have forced an artificially high price on the OS (Considering their volumes, $90 seems a bit high to me for a CD-ROM and a thin book)

                  Anyway, I digress....

What someone might want to try to do to fix this problem is to try the PMODE 1.33 DOS extender, that is a semi-clone of Rational's. If the experience is good, report back so that other's can benefit from your experience.

                  That's it for now,

                    Hi Ira:

I did exactly what you suggested.

I downloaded PMODE and tried it on Windows 2000.

I was hoping against hope that it would work.

Sorry, but adding or deleting a field, or changing the size gives the same results.

                    The database gets trashed.
