Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filters & Search/Sort weirdness

We have a 5-workstation, client/server network. Each workstation has its own program fully installed; all of the databases, sets, supporting files, etc. are on the server machine, along with its own program as well.

Here's the problem: One of the client workstations frequently (but not ALWAYS)finds itself unable to use saved filters or perform a search/sort; when this happens, it comes up empty -- no records identified. This is true whether we create the saved filter on the offending workstation, or on another. It can "see" the saved filter and/or the saved search/sort from the menu of choices available when you "retrieve - F7" the list of saved filters, but when you invoke the filter (or the search/sort), it tells you no records were found that match.

I have been unable so far to ascertain the chain of events that leads to the occurrence of the problem, nor how or why it clears itself up. However, the problem occurs more often than not.

None of the other workstations have this problem, so where should I look on the offending workstation to correct the problem?

    Thanks!

    RE: Filters & Search/Sort weirdness

Sometimes I get a result of no records when I know there are. What I usually have done is run a manual search of some kind and it still sees those records ONLY. I then go to the main menu and set the search back to the default A with IPA. Then RERUN the search again and the results are usually correct. The may not be what you are experencing but sound much like it. Try it and see what happend, it you do not have the IPA Command in the script. I think I usually set the command to IPA before running any searches of any kind to make sure this do NOT Happen.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Ken ... but what's "IPA Command"?

At the Alpha MAIN MENU. {I} Brings up Indexes/ranges.
{P} brings up the Primary Setting screen. There you set any PRIMARY Index you want. {A} is Always by Record number set by alpha. Try setting it to {A}. SELECTS ALL Records. Then RE-RUN your script. See if you get the records you want. This Always seems to fix my not finding records.

        Took it that you knew.

I suspect that what ken is getting at is you may have an active range and not know it. YOu could also go to index, range and chante to the default

Exactly. Set the indexes to Number which is A in all my databases I checked. Then re-run the search.

              RE: Filters & Search/Sort weirdness

Ken and Russ -- thanks for your help so far. I hope it won't end here, because I've tried what you suggest, to no avail on the one offending workstation. I've made sure the ranges are all blank, record number order, no filter, etc., etc., and still no records come up when I do a specific search/sort, or put on a filter with the same objective.

I have noticed that I have both *.SNx files and *SLx files happening for my saved search/sorts, even though all workstations are in multi-user mode. The manual says the "*.SLx files are stored in the Data directory in single-user mode." The fileserver has both types, in great abundance. I would think that I wouldn't be getting ANY *.SLx files, correct? Is it possible the two are competing with each other? If so, how do I "force" it to stop creating *.SLx files? Am I on the right track here, do you think?

The strange thing continues to be that the problem is only with the one workstation, however. Could IT be the one that's creating it's own search/sort files on the fileserver, and then not knowing which set to use again? It's very peculiar, and very frustrating, because that one workstation especially NEEDS these search/sorts.

Of course, none of this addresses the problem of the filters not working either on that one workstation.

              Thanks for your continued help!

                Paul,

Make sure the station is in Multi-user mode and that it has a unique private directory. If this is the case, delete (or move) all *.SL* and *.SH* from that private directory. Then delete/move the UDN's to see if the problem solves itself. Finally try the same with A4.DFL there. Make sure you have sufficient memory on that station with appropriate settings for the shortcut in Windowsas needed.

Finally, make sure that that station has NetBIOS or NetBEUI protocols and is set as the default network protocol.
