Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Indescriminate color changes

We are running Alpha Four v6.2 on a Windows 95 peer-to-peer network. We have set default colors on each workstation to reflect whether the user is working directly on a database or with a set. One workstation gets its color pallet reset daily. We repair it, reboot the computer a few times to verify the changes have stuck and then the next day the user at that workstation complains that the colors are goofed up again.

    We would appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi Gene

Did you check that the work station video card is using the same color depth as the other Stations?

Also is the user of that station using software that no one else is using?

      Robert -

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check it out but I'm pretty sure other software is not an issue but I can see that some other software package may be reseting the color depth. But...why would the changes only appear som some of 20 databases we use? I'll let you know what I find out.

        RE: Indescriminate color changes

        Hi Gene

I had a similar problem which I was never ever able to completely solve. It just seemed to go away after a while.

What would happen is that SOME!!??? of my databases/sets would change the default colors to grey scale.

I know it was a problem with the A4.DFL file.

Another cause which I did know about was the fax software (dos network) which resided in memmory and when my script activated the software is would use ansi and when I returned to the app the screen colors were pretty wierd.!!

The only solution I had was to create a script->reset_color and place a menu choice in my utilities menu which played this script.

        Hope this helps

I haven't had a chance to check on your first suggestion but a reset color script is a great idea. I hate fixing symptoms without curing the problem but that may be what is called for. A script would make it much easier to do than check each color setting.

          I'll keep you informed.

            RE: Indescriminate color changes

I had the problem you describe but not connected with a network. I purchased an IBM Intellistation M with an AGP Video Card. The colors of Alpha Four would change regularly to odd variations. The only thing that worked was replacing the video card to one less sophisticated, more attuned to DOS. I replaced my video card with an S3 PCI card, installed the video card software and never had the problem again. Alpha Four was designed so long ago that some of the newer components are problematical. In this group of messages there is one concering printing problems that I suspect is of the same nature.
