Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Book covering the Conversion A4 to A5

I was reading an interview with susan bush and she mentioned here book had a section on the conversion process.

    link:

I was wondering if there was a book published that was designate to this subject. As I am getting ready undertake this job.

Also if anyone has read that section in the book "Alpha Five Made Easy, The Basics and More for Version 4.5." what did you think about it. And would it be worth picking up in my situation.

    A4v7 converting to A5v6.

    Thank you :)

RE: Book covering the Conversion A4 to A5

    Jimmy,

To the best of my knowledge, there is no book dedicated to converting from Alpha Four (any version) to Alpha Five (any version). You might want to keep in mind that the similarities between A5V6 and previous versions diminish the greater the version difference. Going from A4 to A5 is a complete paradigm shift.

Basically, the only item that come straight across is the data itself (the .dbf file - and the memo fields). EVERYTHING else, menus, forms, reports, scripts - EVERYTHING has to be recreated. If you do a search on this messageboard, you will see lots of comments/suggestions/thoughts on the conversion process. Not an easy task, but one that many of us have accomplished.

Don't make the mistake that many of us have, trying to duplicate everything from A4VX to A5V6. There are newer, better, more sophisticated ways of doing things in A5 then was the case in A4. In fact, you would be better off forgetting what you did and how you did it in A4. Force yourself to think and work in the A5 world. You'll be better off for it.

        Jimmy,

        1) The A5V6 board is the best resource you'll ever find.
        2) When ytou get your copy of A5V6, take a close look at AlphaSports and use it as your guide as to how various features work.
        3) The help files are a goldmine of information.

Is jimmy dean a handle for you? We like to use real names on this board. It keeps a friendly atmosphere.

Consider changing your name on the Modify Your Preferences in the lower right hand corner of most message board forms.

              Thanks

Yea I use the name Jimmy Dean on message boards. But taking your advice, and because the community seems freindly, I changed it to my real name.

Well thank you for the advice and its a pleasure to meet you guys :).

I don't know. I kinda' like the thought of corresponding with the sausage king.
