Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: changing computers

Hey thanks......I had to leave right at 4:30 since kids had ball practice and didn't get a chance to check it out....i just got in this morning and am now going to take a look at what I need to do.

I'm assuming I should run the update AFTER installing the alpha 5 onto the local box? I know for sure, though, I am going to do a complete separate back up of the alpha 5 folder on the server (in addition to our normal daily backup) in case I smell smoke.....

Correct me if wrong...install the a5 then run the update (after renaming the readme file)?

      RE: changing computers

Correct. First install A5 then run Update.

To save time, Unzip Disk1, Disk2 & Disk3 to the same folder,
      then just run setup.exe.

Afterwards, run the A5patch.exe from the Update.

        RE: changing computers

OK...I installed A% onto my box and copied the shortcut to the program and ran it like they do......saving an edit does not work. I click on the tab to save, and the edit is not reflected. I hit F9 to save and the edit is not reflected.

I lick on the tab on toolbar 'Change the current record', make changes then click on 'save the record you are editing and return to view mode', and nope, no changes...

        Help!

              Dave,

As I mentioned previously, Novell also has permissions for programs. So check that A5.EXE has write/modify permissions for the directory where the .dbf's are.

Whoopee!! As a test, I ran the patch on my box and the editing feature has been restored!

I am presently backing up all the data on the server and will update the patch on the users boxes (A5 is on their boxes locally) and will do one of them and let him run it for a while to be sure any regular features are not compromised. The patch appeared to work.

So, I'm going to try it on this one users box and see how it goes....will certainly let you know how it goes....

Just out of curiosity, why did you not apply the patch to begin with, especially when I included that in the instructions? :(

RTF's of screen shots are usually too large. Try saving in .png format. It's just as clear and much more compact.

                          RE: changing computers

Hey...we had a seminar all day yesterday and didn't get back tot it.

However, I mentioned that the date field seemed to screw up, but when i went back to my machine, I entered the date in the format day-month-year (99-99-99) and it took it correctly. The user did mo-day-year and it came back invalid.....

However, he was in a crunch, so i had changed it back to the original setting for him before I did more testing with it on mine, so Monday, I will apply this update again and then see because he came onto my machine and added a new user with no problems, just had to enter the date in a different format....so I'm thinking it is gonna work, but time will tell. Monday I will know more. I really appreciate your assistance and every one else who gave some input...

                          Y'all will hear from me.....

                            Thanks for the update Dave.

FYI, in V5 & beyond, you can customize the date entry format
(and many other properties) with statements like:

                            topparent:Somedate.Entry.Format = "1/" 'Set to 12/31/1998 format
                            topparent:Somedate.Entry.Format = "2/" 'Set to 31/12/1998 format

Yes, I know you're stuck with V1, but sooner or later they will need to upgrade. I'm sure if you review all the new features of V6, the most important one being security functions (ie: control of individual users and prefs), you'll
have an excellent argument for the upgrade.

An update......I installed it on the local box of the two users but NOT on the server (too skeered?) and they have been running it for a week now. This sytem has only two users, so it is quite simple.

Problems. This morning one user got the message: FILE IN USE BY ANOTHER USER OR SESSION. This was a new record being added. We exited and then entered it and it would go through ok. Another message soon popped up: ALPHA FIVE THERE ARE 10 WARNINGS. PLEASE VIEW THEM IN THE TRACE WINDOW FOR DETAILS. (looked high and low; could not find a 'trace window'). Then soon after that, the last message: ERROR: FILE IS IN USE BY ANOTHER USER OR SESSION AT LINE 8.

Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks....

                                RE: changing computers

                                Dave,

the 10 warnings means that when you opened a form or report, that there were efield references that disappeared. Check your screens very carefully to see that all of the fields don't have exactly the same data in them. This can usually be resolved by doing "maintenance" from the control panel/apps tab.

The trace window can be found if you click on the "view" menu item at the top of the screen, then find "trace window". It can be cryptic, but it should give you some insight into what is going on.

The "record locked" message is just that. someone else is adding a new record, or updating the record you are trying to change. Alpha provides a locking mechanism to insure that your changes don't overwrite someone else's simultaneous changes. Once one is done, the locks come off.

                                Tom
