Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    bitmaps in XP

I have been importing bitmaps successfully for some time in Windows 98. Now, with XP, I keep getting the message "cannot read bitmap file" though all else seems normal and I've tried repeatedly. Any ideas?

Can you open the same bitmap image with the Paint program?
If so, try "save as", say yes to Replace, and then retry.

I appreciate your reply, but I just tried your suggestion and still had no success. I even tried renaming the file, to no avail. Any other ideas?

        Mark,

        FYI,

I did a lttle test. I was able to import bitmaps into
A5v1. Caveat Emptor! There appear to be a file size limit.
Could it be that the bitmap(s) you are having a problem
with is/are greater than 1407 kb? (My largest readable)
I could not read one that was 2401kb.

Thanks for the reply. The images I am trying to import average 80 KB, and was able to do this easily under Windows 98. Still stymied.

The only other things I can think of is:
            1. You did not flag (or unflagged) the memo field as type
bitmap in Field rules, Type, Extended fie;d types
            or
            2. The bit maps you are working with are corrupted somehow.

Just to check, try creating a new db with one character field and one memo field. Then see if you can import into that. Also try importing a standard window bitmap from
            thw Windows directory.

Perhaps if you posted a sample db with a problem bitmap I could test it on my system.

              RE: bitmaps in XP

Thanks for the input. I just tried importing some older bitmaps that I had transferred from my old computer, and they worked perfectly. The problem therefore seems to be with recently acquired images with the new machine/XP/MSN 8 set up. With these, I still get the "cannot read bitmap" error message. Are you aware of anything within this newer set up that would somehow block these images? They seem to be fully accessible through Paint.

                None to my knowledge.

The only thing left to try is to load an old bmp with
paint and look at the attributes.

Then load a newer (bad) bmp and compare the attributes to the old.

This appears to be more of an O/S (XP) thing than Alpha Five at this point.

                  RE: bitmaps in XP

Problem solved, albeit in roundabout fashion. Your suggestion from post # 1636 actually works, although I had to tweak the bitmap, somehow putting my stamp on it before saving it. I managed this by making a change, undoing it and then saving the file. Then, the import function works normally. Also, a direct select-copy-paste from Paint into the record's bitmap field seems to work just as well, provided that I save change before moving to another record. Both solutions are a bit unwieldy but I'm relieved to have resolved the issue. I greatly appreciate your help in this matter.

                    Mark

Your problem is actually a common issue. Unknown to many people is the fact that there is more than one bmp format. Depending on what program created the bmp, some other programs may not be able to read it. One of the formats is a compressed format that many programs can not read. The problem is even worse in formats like tif that can be compressed, uncompressed, mac format, or pc format. Most graphics converters or programs like Paint will either give some save options or save it in the most common format. One I use is CompuPic from Photodex. It is cheap, supports nearly all formats, is easy to use, and works very well.
