Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Corrupt Database

My xxx.fpt has grown to over 2GB in 3 months and we hardly use the system anymore. How do I get it back to its original size which was only about 400MB?

Did you try "Maintenance" This is supposed to compact the database anad related files. We have had those problems. I will check with my programmers to see if we can remeember how we got past it.

      RE: Corrupt Database

Thanks for the reply... Yes I have tried the maintenance and the end result was that the file size did not change. I went through DOS to view the file and it seems to have all the data from the previous years and towards 1/2 and 3/4 down I have blank spaces and then more records. Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I think that you have to create a new table with the same structure and append the old table to the new one.

          Allen,

again thank you for replying...how does one do that with Alpha? I was a programmer at one point in time so I understand what you are saying but I do not know Alpha well enough to attemp something of that nature. Then there is the importing of the data...

Chris - I may just be stating the obvious , but if you "rarely use the system anymore", could you just replace the .fpt file from the last known good backup ?

              Lowell,

Thank you for your reply... Though it is not used as much now in contrast to the past, it is still being used on a daily basis to comprise quotes for our clients and internally. Unfortunately no on the back up idea because of several reasons that are too long to elaborate. But to make you feel better, that was the first thing I thought of also.

To see the old structure open that table and choose the restructure button on the database tab. On the database tab choose the create button (open a new database option) and build a new (database / table) using the same structure as the old table. (In version 1 a table was called a database I haven't used version 1 for a long time.) Than open the old table and on the tools tab choose the append button and append the old table to the new one. I hope this helps I'll try to be more specific if you need more help.
