Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem: v2.01 -> v4.50

    Hi:

    I've just downloaded and installed the demo version of Alpha Five v4.50; I currently use Alpha Five v2.01.

    Anyway, I opened up one of my v2.01 databases using v4.50. I made a few entries to existing records and then exited.

    Now, when I try to open up that same database using v2.01 I get two Alpha Five 2.0 error messages. The first says "Error loading ADB. Reached end of file while reading an object." Clicking on this message's "OK" but the second error message pops up and says "Unexpected file format."

    There's nothing in the "readme" or other documentation that says you can't read a 2.0 dateabase in 4.50, (I checked before opening the 2.01 database with 4.50) but apparently something has changed between the versions, and now I can't get back to my original database!!

    HELP!!!

    TIA.

    Tom,

    It sounds to me that there are some differences between the .adb between the two versions, but your data should be safe. The .adb file is only a file that basically oints to your tables/data.

    I would try creating a new empty database in v2.01. Then add your tables to that new database.

      Sorry for all the typos, that should read:

      It sounds to me that there are some differences in the .adb file structure between the two versions, but your data should be safe. The .adb file is basically a file that points to your tables/data.

      I would try creating a new empty database (.adb) in v2.01. Then add your current tables to that new database.

      PS: always make back-ups before performing major database changes/operations.

        RE: Problem: v2.01 -> v4.50

        I ended up exporting the data as an ascii file from v4.50 and then importing the data back into v2.01 in a new empty database, in a new directory. Copying the files that apparently contain all the "other stuff" (forms, browses, operations, etc.), i.e., the DDD, DDM, DDX files (I guessed at all this since the A5 documentation covers *none* of this) got me back to where I started.

        A scary situation and one that Alph Software shouldn't allow to exist!!!

        Thanks for the reply.

          DO YOU STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL DISCS FOR VERSION 2? IF YOU DO, I AM IN NEED OF A FEW DRIVERS. I INSTALLED VERSION 2 IN MY NEW COMPUTER. THEN I GOT RID OF MY OLD COMPUTER AND SOME JUNK PROGRAMS I DID NOT USE ANY MORE. YOU GUESSED IT, I SENT MY ALPHA DISC ALONG WITH THE JUNK. NOW MY COMPUTER SAYS IT NEEDS THE DRIVERS TO BE RELOADED. IF YOU HAVE THEM AVAILABLE, I CAN SEND YOU A LIST OF EXACTLY WHICH ONES I NEED.
          THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR CHECKING,

              Frank;

              Just noticed your posting from almost a year ago. I still have 2.01 disks if you haven't found the drivers.
