Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

NT Environment - Invalid operation Specified

Help! Can anyone explain why Alpha 5 ver 3.0 will not run over a network connection NT to NT? It runs fine for Winxx to NT.
The exact problem is in an APPEND. In trying to update a table, over the network, it responds with an INVALID OPERATION SPECIFIED. I have tried everything including setting a environment PATH statement and resetting the append to be sure the tables see each other.

    Thanks for any help!

RE: NT Environment - Invalid operation Specified

I am receiving the same "invalid operation specified" message in attempting an append under Windows XP using alpha5 3.04, with no network whatever. If I recreate the append operation, I still get the same message. I also noticed that there used to be a patch for alpha5 version 3 which doesn't exist any more. Perhaps that would help if we could get ahold of it.

      Woddy

For what it is worth, I have never gotten this resolved.

        Hello Wes

        That is pathetic.

I just realized I misread the date as being two days ago, not a year ago!

          Woody,

This time I spelled your name right.
          Sorry 'bout that.

I was very impressed with Alpha Software for many years. As a matter of fact, we still run an original DOS based version for a particular project, in addition to a Windows version for something else. It has been a lack of response to the above issue however that has caused me to look at other solutions instead of upgrading as I do not know if an upgrade would cover this or not.

          C'est la Vie.

          Best!

Have you tried contacting Alpha Customer Service via email? As you know, this is a user supported forum and if no users can answer your inquiry, you'll get no answers.

I am sure I did. It has been so long however. It doesn't really matter anymore as I have basically migrated to another DB.

              Thanks

                Wes,
Sorry you didn't get the answer you needed. I would like to point out that A5V3 was developed for Win95. Since A5V3, Alpha has introduced V4.0, V4.5, and V5. In the meantime Microsoft has introduced Win98, Win98SE, Win2000, WinNT, WinME, and WinXP (home and professional and maybe more). IOW you've updated the operating system through 6 upgrades but have not upgraded the program to keep up. I think you'd be quite impressed with V5 which runs on XP and even more impressed with Alpha's commitment to their customers. You might want to visit the home page and download a free trial version to see if you like it.
                Regards, Ohlen
