Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need users guide--Alpha 5 Ver. 2

I am in need of the users guide for Alpha 5 version 2 for windows 95. It is no longer availble from Alpha. The original price was $12.95. I am willing to pay a reasonable price for a copy. Thank You.

    RE: Need users guide--Alpha 5 Ver. 2

    Sam --

I am not particularly computer literate, so perhaps my input could be useful. As the original owner of A5V2, I have the users manual for both Windows 95 and 3.1 -- to put it crudely, I think that Alpha documentation is lacking in almost any helpful way to a beginning database user, such as myself.

A friend just bought v4.5 and paid for their 'complete' manual (approx $58), and IT seemed to be terrible, too. It appeared to be "Xeroxed," poorly copied, and based on how things were explained, seemed to assume that the user was experienced. Being not experienced, maybe I'm wrong, but my friend IS computer literate and very literate in other databases and had a lot of trouble deciphering the manual.

As a neophyte database user, I need good documentation to help me wade through even the simplest of procedures, so doing things like creating tables and sets is entirely out of the question with Alpha's documentation. It all seems to be written for the user who has a good foundation of databases and the Alpha product.

I have been unsuccessfully searching the internet for an aftermarket manual and have found none.

The user manual for A5V2 is terrible but perhaps I could scan and zip it to you. It is 37 pages and would take some time that might require me to do this over several days, but let me know.

    Sincerely,
    Brent

PS. I myself like A5V2 for simple stuff, but I've had to pay a consultant for help. I've spent 100's of hours trying to do was actually fairly simple, but without good documentation, became very difficult. I would have upgraded to a later version a long time ago, but the poor documentation has kept me away.

After using Alpha for a LOT of personal stuff and spending so many hours attempting to learn basic things, I'm ready to give up and go to Access (Ugh!). BUT, at least there is a lot of help to be had, TONS of documentation everywhere, and lots of support. Being that I have Office 97, I could have gone to it already, but it's a shame to lose all the Alpha time spent. Right now, I'm faily well chapped at Alpha because I've unsuccessfull tried to properly create sets with relational tables so that I don't have to keep re-typing the addresses and phone numbers of the repeat businesses that I enter data for personal tracking. I have a really nice table for entries, but sets aren't needed for that and I must continually retype repetitive info when a new invoice is entered.

It's just simple personal stuff that I could live without, but it would be nice to be able to do things the way databases are designed to do.

Take care, and please let me know if you want me to email you the manual.

          Hello JB,

Thank you for trying to help. The original 37 page "Getting Started" manual that came with the program is one that I already have. There is another one titled "Users Guide" that is well over 100 pages, and thank God (or whoever you pray to) someone sent it to me. Why can't I have that kind of luck in Vegas? It gives a much more precise breakdown of how the whole Alpha thing works.

I started with Alpha 3 years ago and found it to be awesome. I hope things work out for you. Godd luck and thanks again for your response.

            Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your response. I got a copy of it about two months ago. Sweet. It was out of print, but someone else was kind enough (like yourself) to send me an extra copy they had laying around, and all I had to do was pay for postage. There are still some good people (like yourself) left in this world. Be well.

DO YOU STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL DISCS FOR VERSION 2? IF YOU DO, I AM IN NEED OF A FEW DRIVERS. I INSTALLED VERSION 2 IN MY NEW COMPUTER. THEN I GOT RID OF MY OLD COMPUTER AND SOME JUNK PROGRAMS I DID NOT USE ANY MORE. YOU GUESSED IT, I SENT MY ALPHA DISC ALONG WITH THE JUNK. NOW MY COMPUTER SAYS IT NEEDS THE DRIVERS TO BE RELOADED. IF YOU HAVE THEM AVAILABLE, I CAN SEND YOU A LIST OF EXACTLY WHICH ONES I NEED.
              THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR CHECKING,
              FRANK
