Default Converting Alpha 5 v1 to Access 97

How does one convert an Alpha Five version 1 database to Access 97 format? I have already tried to import it into Access 97, but haven't been able to get the reports, queries, code, etc. imported into Access 97 as well. How would one go about getting these imported?
I have Alpha 5 version 3 also, would it be easier to convert from this version to access 97 format?

    Hugh,

My thought is that only the data can be converted. Since Access and Alpha are totally different in their approach to data management, you will have to redo your forms, reports, queries, etc. in the new system.

Thanx man for the advice. I just wish I didn't have to do all the extra work that comes along changing programs.

    Hi Hugh,

Clicked on this forum by mistake (instead of version 4.)But was it really by mistake?

I have Access 97 at work and am converting everything to A5v4 and A5v5 when it comes out. Unless, you're forced to go to Access, you really ought to give it more thought. (But then, I don't know your reason for the switch)

My reasons for the switch are:
    1. A5 is easier to program and Xbasic is easier than VB.
    2. This messge board is far superior to any of the boards for Access.
    3. A5 is more powerful, especially in the report area.
    4. You will need to create a query for nearly every report you create, unless it based on only one table.
    5. There are some things in Access that require code that A5 does with ease, such as viewing the most recent record (involving a set)

Comparing A5v1 to A97 is not really a comparison. A97 has A5v1 beat by a long, country mile. A5v4 has A97 beat and A5v5 will widen the gap.

Finally, the bits and pieces I'm picking up indicates that A97 may be the last version for Access. I suspect Visual Basic will take over. If it does, it will need some gigantic imporvements as most of VB6 is quite labor intensive.

P.S. The only thing you can import to A97 is the data. Everything else will need to be relearned. Fortunately, form design is very comparable.

    Hi kenn!

    >>Finally, the bits and pieces I'm picking up indicates that A97 may be the last version for Access.>Comparing A5v1 to A97 is not really a comparison. A97 has A5v1 beat by a long, country mile. A5v4 has A97 beat and A5v5 will widen the gap. >Access 97 is limited to 1GB of storage and 2BG for Access 2000. >Access 2000 is far and away a better product than Access 97. If anyone is going to work seriously with Access, this is the way to go -- it's a truly significant upgrade to 97. >Access 2000's interface is much more navigable and intuitive that Alpha Five's while VBA tools and add-on features make it easy environment in which to write code..)

Also, in light of Geoff's comments, I'd be curious how you would compare Access 200 with A5.

I'm not advocating Access. I'm still in the process of making the transition from the character to the GUI based world and haven't decided which of the Windows database products I feel most comfortable with (if any ).

    O.J.

    P.S.

For anyone reading this post, I should note that Geoff still prefers A5 over Access 2000:

    >> Alpha Five is my first choice (and recommendation) when developing an application for a client, or working with their data.

Slip of the fingers. Meant Access 2000.

Of course, It may not be the last release but MS appears to be to the point where VB7 will include the ease of Access. If so, A5 will have strong competition.

DO YOU STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL DISCS FOR VERSION 1? IF YOU DO, I AM IN NEED OF A FEW DRIVERS. I INSTALLED VERSION 2 IN MY NEW COMPUTER. THEN I GOT RID OF MY OLD COMPUTER AND SOME JUNK PROGRAMS I DID NOT USE ANY MORE. YOU GUESSED IT, I SENT MY ALPHA DISC ALONG WITH THE JUNK. NOW MY COMPUTER SAYS IT NEEDS THE DRIVERS TO BE RELOADED. IF YOU HAVE THEM AVAILABLE, I CAN SEND YOU A LIST OF EXACTLY WHICH ONES I NEED.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR CHECKING,
