Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't save rules

    Hello...

Ok...well, I've been the lucky one to inherit a database that has been 3/4 finished by our tech after he was "fired" from the job. I'm trying to update a simple field and put a easy lookup table on it. I know I have it set up correctly, but when I try to save it, I get an error message, and then it tries to crash, which my Norton Crashguard attempts to save. In addition to that, our invoice reports are a mess and driving me nuts. Either the amounts come out correct with the detail section creeping down the page with every invoice, or the detail stays still and the total amounts are all wrong. Wasn't I the lucky one to inherit this mess.
If anyone could help me in this matter, it would be greatly appreciated. I just want to get it done and over with and get my boss off my back!!

    Thanks,
    Brian

    RE: Can't save rules

    Hi Bill,
I would need to know more about how your invoicing system is set up, in order to brainstorm about invoicing...I'm thinking, though, in terms of posting, summarizing, or appending - but again, it all depends on the linking field (customer # - invoice #).

Regarding field rules not saving...I've encountered that and ended up closing the program, then opening it and designing the field rules and it'll save - however, I'm on a stand-alone unit, so this may not work, either. Good luck

      RE: Can't save rules

      Hi, Wanda!

Thanks for replying to my cry for help. The invoicing system is set up using a form for the invoicing, with all the appropriate fields in place for the entry. That portion is fine. The problem resides in when trying to print these damnable invoices using the reports designed by our ex-tech. There are 3 reports designed to give options to print the invoices: Invoice (stand alone), Invoice-Range (to print a specified range of invoices), and Invoices to be Printed (which, based on a sorting statement (ex: If Print = Y) to print all the invoices with the Y in the Print field). It's honestly a mess....the detail, when in preview mode to check the print format, when scrolled, the detail moves down the page...and also the totals in the page footer are wrong. They are taking the totals from the next invoice. This happens on all three of them.

The problem of saving the rules is a baffling one, and I do believe that I'm going to have to call AlphaSoftware on that one. No matter how many times I close the program, re-boot the computer, club the hard drive with a mallet (just kidding), we still get the error message and then the system crashes. I'm worried that the files have become corrupt somehow and that a re-installation might have to happen, which I really, really, really would like to avoid due to fear of losing everything.

Again, I do appreciate your writing back....it's always nice to know that there are people out there willing to help another!!

      Thanks,
      Brian

        RE: Can't save rules

        Brian,

I saw your desparate call for help . I am just a neophyte with Alpha 5 and I am using version 1. However, I had a similar problem with the printing of reports, i.e., creeping detail and incorrect totals.

My problem resulted because I was using the wrong footer for the totals and the creeping was from having the page break at the wrong location. I doubt if this will reallyhelp you, but it will give you an idea of one plave where you might look for your problem.

Hope this has been of some help.

          RE: Can't save rules

          Brian,
You might have trouble saving rules if one of the rules is impossible to evaluate. Example: a divide by zero.

Open your table and 1 at a time change the calculated, default, lookup, post, etc rules to user entered rules. Then try saving again. If you are successful, the last rule converted will be the culprit. You can then go back and change the others back to the original type an the previous rule will appear again. The old rules remain until you compact the database.

Let me know how this works.

            Hi Brian,
Did you get your problem fixed? I read through all the responses and they all seem good. I hope one of them helped. And, you're welcome for thanking me for taking a stab at it. I really appreciate the people on this board, too...couldn't get along very well without them!
