Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Win XP Pro and Alpha 5 version 4.5

I searched the board for XP Pro compatibility problems with A5 version 4.5 built 266, but could not find any answer.

Is there any problem using version 4.5 with XP Pro?

    Thanks

RE: Win XP Pro and Alpha 5 version 4.5

If memory serves there are two issues:

    1) XP's compatibility mode for Alpha 5 (vers 4.5) should be set to Windows 2000.

    2) If your app is running on a LAN XP's default settings are often configured for client server apps, which permit local buffering and deferred disk writes in order to improve performance with C/S apps. This can wreck any file sharing app like Alpha Five (and others). So the recommendation is to disable "opportunistic locking" in XP.

Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
256986 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986/) Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
        SUMMARY
By default, opportunistic locking is enabled for server message block (SMB) clients that run one of the Windows operating systems that is listed at the beginning of this article. Opportunistic locking allows clients to lock files and locally cache information without the risk of another user changing the file. This increases performance for many file operations but may decrease performance in other operations because the server that grants the opportunistic lock must manage the breaking of that lock when another user requests access to the file.
        MORE INFORMATION
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. The location of the client registry entry for opportunistic locking has changed from the earlier location in Microsoft Windows NT. In later versions of Windows, you can disable opportunistic locking by setting the following registry entry to 1:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\
        OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
        Default: 0 (not disabled)

Note The OplocksDisabled registry value configures Windows clients to either request or not request opportunistic locks on a remote file.
You can also deny the granting of opportunistic locks by setting the following registry entry to 0:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
        EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1
        Default: 1 (Enabled by Default)

Note The EnableOplocks value configures Windows-based servers (including Workstations sharing files) to allow or deny opportunistic locks on local files.
In addition, you can use the following values to tune opportunistic locking for Windows-based computers that have granted opportunistic locks.

The following value specifies the minimum link throughput that the server allowed before it disables raw and opportunistic locks for this connection:
MinLinkThroughput REG_DWORD 0 to infinite bytes per second
        Default: 0
The following value specifies the maximum time that is allowed for a link delay. If delays exceed this number, the server disables raw I/O and opportunistic locking for this connection:
        MaxLinkDelay REG_DWORD 0 to 100,000 seconds
        Default: 60
The following value specifies the time that the server waits for a client to respond to an oplock break request (smaller values allow detection of crashed clients more quickly, but might potentially cause loss of cached data):
        OplockBreakWait REG_DWORD 10 to 180 seconds
        Default: 35

Note You must restart the computer for these registry changes to take effect.

RE: Win XP Pro and Alpha 5 version 4.5

Is your recommendation for XP Service pack 1 or 2.

On one station I have Service pack 1 and A5V4.5 operates quite well and on the station with Service pack 2 it is extremely slow. On the latest we have also the last updates from Windows.

One more point, Office 2003 seems to be conflicting with A5V4.5

            Thanks again

I hope Tom will weigh back in and assist you with this question. I was trying to help with the question of disabling the locking. I do not have any direct knowledge of V4.5 and xp conflicts.

RE: Win XP Pro and Alpha 5 version 4.5

I'm sorry to say that I don't have any specific suggestions for you.

I use A5V4.5 on two different XP machines. Both have SP2 and all Windows updates. It runs just fine. No noticeable slow down.

I have both installations set to run Alpha in Windows 2000 compatibility mode. You havent' said if you followed the earlier recommendation or not. I assume you have.

I do NOT have Office 2003 installed on either machine. I'm using Office 2000, with its patches. Do not know if this is significant.

In other forums folks have reported that performance will slow down dramatically if security services are protecting your database folder on the server. Certain antivirus and spyblocking programs actually screen all disk writes before passing them through to the server. I hesitate to advise you on this since I'm not a security expert by any means. Others have recommended that these systems be configured to exclude the primary database folder on the server from these automatic protections.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you compare the setup of the machines that are running well against those that are running slowly. Is there anything else that might explain the difference you're seeing, other than SP2? (things to look for: network protocols the same? mapped drives the same ? etc.)

I suppose if you're really desperate, you might consider rolling back SP2 to SP1 to see if that makes a difference. This at least would help to confirm your suspicion that SP2 is at fault.

You could also begin searching the Microsoft Knowledgebase for articles dealing with network performance of file sharing databases and SP2.

It seems to me this is a Microsoft issue. V.4.5 was released long before Office 2003, XP, or SP2.

Dare I suggest it's time to upgrade Alpha Five?

                    Thanks Tom,

Application runs in Windows 2000 compatibility mode an no improvement.

I will follow your suggestion to rool back to WP SP1 and see what happens.

One other station is XP SP2 and runs fine but that is an upgrade from SP1, while the one I am having problem with is an original SP2, not an upgrade from SP1.

A third station is running on XP SP1 and works also OK.

I am considering using A5V6 and have downloaded the trial version that i will try next week after the station is rolled back to SP1

I will let you know of the results.

Thanks again for your input I really appreciate
