Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Quick Filter used to filter a report

I'm a SQL dba who has been called in to help a user who has an application in Alpha 5. I've been told that quick filter should work like this:

He looks at the contents of a table then uses quick filter to limit the view. He should then be able to close the window with the data in it and quick filter still be 'active'. He then goes to a report that he has built on the same table he was just filtering but the report has no where clause filtering. When the report is run, it should filter based on the filter he had previously used on the data itself in another window. It appears from the documentation that this should work. But no filtering in the report is occurring. Also, the quick filter is not staying 'active'. i.e. When you go back into the data after closing the window with a quick filter, it is now gone. I'm under the impression that the filter should stay 'active' until it is turned off.

Has anyone seen this behavior or is this behavior as expected?

The report must be set up to use

    "Current selection of records"

and there should be no other filter designed for the quickfilter to determine which records are in the report.

Open the report in design mode, choose the Select Records menu, ....
    There can be only one.

Current selection of records is chosen. I have tried creating new reports that are extremely simple and I have not put any filters in them.

        Jane,

Here are a couple more suggestions and ideas for you.

        1) The most likely cause of the behavior you're seeing is the presence of another filter in the report layout, as Stan mentioned. Next most likely: the report is based on a different set or table than the form you were using to do the quick filter. For the form's "view" of the records to be honored in the report the form and report layouts must be based on the same table or set.

        2) After the form's quick filter is set, close it. Then open the 'default form' or 'default browse' for the same table or set. Is the filter still in place?

After filtering then closing, and reopening the filter is not active anymore.

Either I'm not making myself clear, or you're doing something that's different from what I am expecting.

            Open AlphaSports.
Close the opening form to get to the control panel.
            Choose tables/sets tab
            Double click Customer table
You're now looking at the default browse for the table.
Quick filter the table using the tool on the toolbar, to limit the display to records that match the first customer's lastname.

            Close the default browse.
            Open the default form.

the query / filter should still be in place.

You can get to the default form or the default browse from the tables and sets tab of the control panel by right clicking on any table.

Oops, I forgot you're using A5V4. Instead of AlphaSports open the Invoice sample in your program files folder. Follow the same directions thereafter. -- t

RE: Quick Filter used to filter a report

The test has been performed and the filter is not there after closing the form where it was applied. The filter does work when you use it in one session - ie the form you specify in does appear to filter correctly - it won't maintain that filter though.

I'm testing with vers 4.5, the last build for this version. Are you using an earlier out of date version?

Reinstall worked. I think it might have something to deo with the user that installed the product vs the user that used it? Some configuration that maybe didn't get instaleld properly?
