Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Combine 2 tables

I have 2 offices. Data is input at both locations. Once a week I would like to combine them into one. Then they both could have the same info on monday. All records have a common character field with the client#. I would want the final (combined) table to keep all client names, but to save the most recent record. Typical changes are phone #'s, addresses. There is a date field which auto records the last change date. It needs to combine all, exclude older duplicates, exclude one of the duplicates when no change has taken place, and finally add to the new table any new client records. Can this be done without brain damage? There are about 20 fields per record.

    RE: Combine 2 tables

    Richard,

Synchronizing the same table, maintained at two locations, can be both frustrating and perplexing. Here are some ideas for you:

    1) You could create a new logical field in the table and arrange to automatically set it true whenever a record is entered (new) or changed. Once a week you could query the table for all records where this new 'flag' field is True, and then copy these records to a temp table that would then be appended (overwrites enabled) at the other location. Before doing the append the flag field in each temp table record would be set 'false'. The second office would follow the same pattern on its end, sending only changed or new records to the first office. The two tables will be synchronized until someone at either end starts deleting records! Naturally, to prevent unwanted duplications the flag fields would have to be reset to 'False' after each temp table is created. You should also verify that the 'flag' field doesn't get set true when records from the other office are appended.

    2) An alternative would be to create a new field in the table to record the time when the record was last modified. You could copy both tables to a third table, and then sort the combined table using a special index. The index would establish a sort sequence based on the date and time the records were last modified (most recent at top of list, oldest at bottom). A delete duplicates operation run against this table should delete the superseded records, leaving the more recent records intact.

      RE: Combine 2 tables

To clarify option (2). The index in the new table would be sorted in order (ascending) by:

      client
      datelastmodified
      timelastmodified

I omitted the 'client' in the previous message, and while it was probably obvious, felt it best to state it explicitly.

Thanks Tom, I'll probably try the second version. Rich
