Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    More about menus

How would I have a custom menu-bar displaying if all forms in an application are closed? As I understand it, custom-built menu bars have to be attached to a form.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

    Martin.

Martin, unless you're going to give your use access the control panel, I think at least one form must be active at all times. -- tom

So you can't use a menu bar as a sort of Main Menu, where someone can start from. They have to already be in an option?

Martin, such a thing might be possible in Version 5, using an xdialog window that's not tied to a table. However, in vers 4 I'm pretty sure that there are no free floating menubars.

Just out of curiosity, what would you display below the menu which could not be done with a form?

              RE: More about menus

Alpha 5V5 even has an example of using a toolbar as a menu by docking it on the side. It is included as part of the Alpha Sports sample. I don't think this can be done in earlier versions.

Nothing, Tom, it was only for cosmetic reasons - most (but by no means all) Windows apps. tend to use the menu bar to navigate. Thanks, both, for clarifying.

Why not create a blank form with no objects? Since a menu is normally tied to a form, there is nothing to prevent using a blank form. Most developers have a dedicated menu form using a dummy table, so creating a blank form is not much of a change. You could get fancy and supply a bitmap background.

                    Martin:

I was thinking the same as Jerry.

I've attached a crude, funny looking example of how this might be done.

Let me know what you think about it.

                      Hi Ken,

Thanks for sending that, and apologies for not replying sooner. Actually, I was thinking along the same lines, and even have a graphic on the "default" form.

If one is careful to keep track of what's in use, it is, of course, possible to close down the default form, remembering to reopen it when exiting from all other forms (you can display a "Select from drop-down menu's above" - type message on the form). I've also found it useful for displaying the opening password input - it sort of gives a reason for it being there - and I'm trying to ake it display messages when running various utilities, although I seem to have got stuck writing defaultform.helpbox.text from a function. Probably need to send a few refresh()es around.

                      Thanks again.

                      Martin.

Before anyone kindly takes the trouble to tell me, I realise that that should have been

                        :defaultform:helpbox.text

                        which makes it work!
