Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    LOSING RECORDS

Users have periodically complained of missing records. I've shrugged it off as user error until now. I have 2 tables where I have backup copies from different dates and there are records missing from the more current copy. What can be done to try and retrieve the data if anything? Also, if there are deleted records can they be restored? And lastly, why and how does this happen?

    RE: LOSING RECORDS

    Russ,

Determining the cause for the unexpectedly missing (deleted) records requires careful troubleshooting and detective work. This can be very time consuming. Maybe you can figure out the pattern by comparing the two backup versions you have. Here's an example where referential integrity caused records to disappear unexpectely. If you're using referential integrity enabled in your set designs perhaps this pertains to you, too.

You should also try searching this forum for other threads on Referential Integrity or for Lost Records or for Disappearing Records.

Recovering deleted records is possible until the table is packed. In vers 4 of Alpha Five this requires a script to undelete them. This has been discussed and illustrated on other occasions... search this forum, and also www.learn alpha.com for details. Be forewarned... an effort to recover deleted records will recover them all... even the ones you really intended to delete on purpose so you can very quickly create a nightmarish tangle of your table. Approach this with great care, and maintain reliable backups at each point along the way.

I don't want you to think that I know very much about A5 but as you might read in my recent post I had a problem with a table not showing records--AT ALL!

Try this (I'd be interested in your results. Set up an operation that 'Copies' the particular table you are missing data. Then inspect that table for your missing data. Never mind the set at this point.

If you do not find your data there, try opeing the respective .dbf in a word processor. Word seemed to work for me but your mileage may vary. I was still in the developement stage when I did this with only a 12 record payload. If you have more, finding you particular data would be difficult. Using the search function in Word or your processor will be helpful. If you find your data in there then that file is corrupt somehow. You don't say how many records you have in your table or how many are missing.

If you find your missing data in there, I admit I don't know how you would recover it, but I'd (we'd) like to know what you find.

You can also open a .dbf in excel with the benefit that the fields all line up nicely in columns with field names as column headers.

If you find the data this way you can save the .dbf as an .xls file and then import it.
          There can be only one.
