Update To Parent From Child

Is there any way to update (post) a value to a field in the parent table dependent on the values in a field for all the associated children table.

If a parent has 3 children and only 2 of those are cancelled I do not want to update the cancelled field in the parent. However if there are 3 children that are all cancelled I would like to update the cancelled field in the parent. Is this possible.

Any help on this as always greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure it could be done easily with the post field rule, since the decision to post or not cannot be determined from the confines of the current record.

You could do this at the form level with a script that runs when your user saves a record to the child table. On save the script could wake up, look around, open another instance of the table, scan for related records, count the number cancelled, and then write a changed value to the parent table...

Since no one has come up with any ideas, here is one possible method. You could make the parent field a calculated field and use the lookup() function in an expression to check is any child records exist that match the parent.

For example, if the cancelled field is a logical field, you might use something like this

if(lookup(childtable,filter,lookupexpression) = "",.T.,.F.)

This would return true if no matching child records were found and false if any child records were found. There might be a more elegant way, but this should work.
