Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Age Calculation

    I received a function from someone on this board about a year ago regarding age calculation. The function seemed to be doing its job, but now some of the ages are seriously wrong. The date in the computer is set correctly and everything looks fine. However, the ages lad behind anywhere form 1 to 5 years. They are never recorded as older than they should be, they are always younger.

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    Brett:

    Where are you using the function?

    If you are using it in a field set up with a calculated field in the field rules, the age will only change when the record is saved (or resaved).

    If the above is the case, the age reflected is probably the age the person was when the record was originally entered, or when the record was last edited.

    The function should probably only be used in a calculated field on a form, browse, letter, or report. This way it calculates the correct age whenever the form ~ report is previewed or printed. Only the date of birth should be permanently stored in a field in the table.

      Craig:

      Thanks for the advice. I will try it, but I have tried to resave the record and the age will not change. I will try copying the function right into the form in a calculated field.

        What function are you using? Where are you using it?

        My earlier thoughts may be wrong. Perhaps you have the field set to default to the age instead of calculating the age?

        Post more detail and someone will help you out...

          Here is one function which has proven reliable.

          function Age as N(DateVal as D)

          years = val(left(cdate(date()),4))-val(left(cdate(DateVal),4))
          if val(right(cdate(date()),4))>=val(right(cdate(DateVal),4))
          age = years
          else
          age = years - 1
          end if

          There are a number of variations on this and other ways to get the age. This one has never given a problem.

            That didn't come out right. The function is

            function Age as N(DateVal as D)

            years = val(left(cdate(date()),4))-val(left(cdate(DateVal),4))
            if val(right(cdate(date()),4))>=val(right(cdate(DateVal),4))
            age = years
            else
            age = years - 1
            end if

            end function

              You wrote. "....I have tried to resave the record and the age will not change....".

              I've had a similar problem and a reveltion about 'resaving' a record to update a calculated field. When one views it in a form, the record won't enter 'change' mode until the text in a field has actually been changed and the cursor moved from it. When that occurs the calculated fields will change, usually on-the-spot. Like the others say .... better to leave the data in the record as the date of birth and make age references in report layouts.
