    Default Dr. Peter Wayne's books

Has anyone used Dr. Peter Wayne's books to learn how to program in A5. I learn best by hands on training examples. I was told that is what Dr. Peter Wayne's books are. I would like some opinions, good or bad.

I've just started reading "Application Programming in Alpha5 Version 5" today. His first book was far too simple and did not give anything that yoiu could not learn on your own. This book how ever is much more detailed and has already answered an important question for mw on building a form to get variables and pass them on to a report filter.
So far this book is worth the money.

    Ken,

I've found all three his books to be very valuable.

Sorry Ohlen, but I figured out how to use the program before I bought the first book. The XBASIC book and the programing applications book are truly great. I just feel that the first book lacked real world introduction procedures such as filtering reports and prompting for variables. Putting in a months worth of data and deleting it to start the next month is not practical. After all thats why we use a database instead of a spread sheet.

    Hi,
I have the book xbasic for Everyone; I find it very good and informative. How anybody would allow any book, let alone a book concerned with computor programming, to have so many "typos" and issued with their name on it is baffling to me.

Thanks for the replys, sounds like I may get them.

How about some of the other books, has anyone used any of them and what do you think of them.

    Ken,

Even though I've been using Alpha Five for many years, I'm reading "Application Programming in Alpha5 Version 5". I'm almost done with it, but it was very helpful in that I learned about new functions and techniques I was previously unaware of. I've noticed a few small errors in the book, and I'll be forwarding my obersations to Dr. Wayne, when I finish my compiliation. The only negative I've found is at times he makes presumptions about readers knowledge of Alpha Five. eg: In one chapter, he starts with "open the query genie", but no prior mention is given of how to find the query genie.

Yes, the writers take TOO much for granite. One needs a STEP by STEP to get started like A4 did. I used one called GETDATES the entire time I used A4 for 8 years, then ran a search. That is what I need in A5 but have failed to find it with the ease of A4.
