Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ACCESS VS ALPHA5 PROBLEM

In my position of being as a Supervisor of the Voting Checklist, I have been using Alpha5v4 with a great deal satisfaction, because of the ability to easily program the database.

The town has recently installed a XP Software and tied us into a server. However, I still have Alpha5 on the server, but in the future they want everyone on ACCESS. Access2000 does not come close to Alpha5 when it comes to programming for ease of entering data and other chores which have to done for the checklist.

I am told that Access2000 will autofill just as easy as Alpha5, but I can't make it work like Alpha5.

I have not got any help from any Microsoft Access groups.

I thought I would like to send this info in hopes that someone may concur with my findings.

    Would appreciate any comments.

    RE: ACCESS VS ALPHA5 PROBLEM

    Nip,

Many here will concur with your position. If you search this board and the A5V5 board you'll find lengthy discussions of Alpha vs Access. However, regardless of the facts, you are facing database ignorance among the elite. All they know is Access because it's all they've ever been exposed to. Even those who've never used a database, will opt for Access since it comes from Mi........... And after all, how many IT types have ever lost a job recommending Mi.......... They know if they recommend Access and something doesn't work out, it's got to be someone else's fault. After all, they recommended the best and the "industry standard".

Ease of use, functionality, and effective use of personnel don't matter to the ignorant elite. Regardless of the facts, you will have a tough time convincing them.

BTW, the ignorant elite exist in all phases of business; not just IT.

      RE: ACCESS VS ALPHA5 PROBLEM

      Hi Ohlen

I appreciate your reply and agree with it whole heartly. I find know way that access200 will automatically fill in data from another table that has Street as a relationship. Alpha5 does a fine job. I have it set up on a form. I am told by the administrator that Access2000 will do the same, but like you say the Elite have not the time.

I have to admit that I am an old retired General Electric Engineer serving in this Elected position.
I am going to the sight you suggested in Alpha5v5.

      Thanks again for your response.

        RE: ACCESS VS ALPHA5 PROBLEM

        Nip:

I have done many of these 'autofills' from another table in Access. If you could post or send the db with some sample records, I'd be happy to take a look at it.

          RE: ACCESS VS ALPHA5 PROBLEM

          Nip,

It can be done in Access! It is a lot harder and no fun. It will take you some time to work it out though.

I am no proponent of access, but have seen your shoes before and it did the job. I love Alpha for its ease and speed and can understand the ignorance of the higher ups that are causing you and possibly others to make more overtime money ( I hope ).

TAKE THE MONEY, then yell for more leeway next time.

            RE: ACCESS VS ALPHA5 PROBLEM

I use Access and Alpha Five. I had the same problem when I first started using Access. You want to write "point in time" data from a lookup table into your main table. It can be done but not nearly as easily as in A5. I found the answer in a book called "Running Microsoft Access 97 by John Viescas (Microsoft Press). I believe he wrote an updated version called "Running Microsoft Access 2000." If you can get your hands on either of these two books, you will probably find the answer.

This is a good example of why A5 can compete with Access. What is really a no-brainer in A5 is a pain in the butt in Access.
