Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Interactive window, how to

    Hi,
I am trying to use the interactive window to test an xbasic script of a button on a form.
I can copy the script into the window, but don't know how to have the script "run", so that it performs all it's lines. It seems to more or less work if I go to the end of each line and hit "enter", but then it includes a blank line, and results badly if that is eg: the first line of an "if" command.
I suppose there is a better way of running the whole script at one time ?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Brian.

    RE: Interactive window, how to

Any valid Xbasic script statement that can fit on one line, can be executed interactively. To
combine multiple commands into a single line, use a semi-colon between commands. For
    example:
    FOR i = 1 to 10 ; TRACE.WRITELN(STR(i)); NEXT I

    From the xbasic online documentation.
    There can be only one.

      Stan,
      Thanks for the response.
Tried that after reading it, it is about an 8 line script. Didn't work, but maybe because I broke it up into different lines with a semicolon at the end of each line with a carriage return.
So if I just replace carriage return with semicolon it should work ? Will try it.

      Thanks
      brian.

        RE: Interactive window, how to

        Brian,

The interactive editor runs in its own space. It doesn't know about any forms that may be open in design mode at the time it's started.

Depending upon what your script does, you probably
should type it one line at a time, pressing enter after each. The ENTER key will cause that line to execute. This results in the script being executed one line at a time, just like in the debugger (well, almost just like...).

If your script includes code blocks, like if ... end if or while ... end while sequences put them all on one line, using semicolons to delimit the lines which would be separate in the normal code editor.

Having said all this, I caution you against trying to use the Interactive Editor to build or test multi-line scripts. In my opinion you're better off using the code editor, and doing your debugging there.

I use the interactive editor to test filter expressions especially query.filter expressions. I do not debug multi-line scripts there.

          Brian,

Why aren't you using the Debugger that comes with A5 v 4.5?
That way you can see results of variables, fields, etc.

That would probably be more helpful.
          (or did I miss something?)

            RE: Interactive window, how to

            Hi to all
Thanks for the advice, I am about 200 % more knowledgeable than before about the interactive window.
Going to the end of each line, then pressing enter, seems to work the best for me; but also enters a blank line which then I have to delete.
In A4 there is an option to "play" a script, as well as editing it etc. Each script had a name, and could be played from inside another script. Nesting scripts therefore was easy.
I expect I am missing something, but so far, have not found it that easy in A5. I consider myself still at about 1% past the bottom of the learning curve.
            Thanks for the help.

              Jay,
Thanks for the advice, I guess that is my next move. Good news is that I got the script to work, well nearly, thru messing around with code editor/interactive window. Considering it is approx an 8 line script, that averages approx 3 hrs per line! Still, I hope to improve; and need to !
              Thanks for the help,

              Brian.
