Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Violated.ddd

    Hi Phorum,

Suddenly my append from floppy does not work. It gives the error
message that "Cannot find c:|program files|a5v4|violated.ddd.

The database in it's entirety is in C:|program files|a5v4|frog. I
searched the hard drive (in windows "find") for violated.ddd without
success. Where is it supposed to be?

Thanks for your time to examine this problem,
    efs

BTW, even though it gives the message cannot find C:|program files|a5v4
    |violated.ddd it does append the records.

      RE: Violated.ddd

      Ed,

The 'violated' table is where Alpha stores information on records which could not be appended. When Alpha creates it the first time it creates the related dictionary files, too (ddd, ddm, ddx and possibly the fpt). On my system these appear in the EXE folder for Alpha Five, with the Violated.DBF file. Can't explain why your's is missing. Suggest you manually delete all the Violated.* files from your EXE folder and do another append. I think Alpha Five will recreate them for you.

      Check user's guide, pp 165, 190 and 242 for add'l info.

        Hi Tom,
Thank you for the response, I'll get chance to look into that later

          Hi Tom,

I deleted the violated.dbf and dbt files from c:|program files|a5v4 and
then ran the append operation again. It recreated the violated.dbf but
did not recreate the violated.dbt nor ddd. Any other sugestions?

            Tom,
BTW, the violated.dbf file that was just created in
c:|program files|a54v does not contain any data.

              Hi,
Now it is really weird, after recreating violated.dbf and then
compacting the database the append operation gives the error message
cannot find c:|program files|a5v4|frog|jobs.dbG. I have very carefully
checked for typos in the append design and do not find a one.
Incidently, I do not get the can't find
              c:|program files|a5v4|violated.ddd message now.

                Another BTW !

What the heck is a DBG file, or is there a virus going around that
                changes F in an extension to a G ?

Ed, 99 out of 100 problems I've ever had with appends were due to faulty source table data. If it were me I would not be trying to debug or fix anything anywhere until I first each and every record in the source data file.

                    RE: Violated.ddd

                    Hi Tom,

This is peculiar. First of all I have 2 buttons on a menu that is based
on a dummy table. 1 button will append data to jobs.dbf and the other
will zap jobs.dbf. The zap button works great. The append floppy button
gives an error after a few seconds and presents an error message that
it can't find c:|program files|a5v4|frog|jobs.db"G" (without the quotes
and uppercase they are just there to emphasize their presence). The
really peculiar thing is that it does the append properly, I checked
every record. But, the "G" thingy led me to search the HD for *.dbg,
lo and behold I found 4 of them, 2 each in 2 different DBs. (not
tables, different apps and these 2 DBs work perfectly). Go figure.
                    Many thanks for your time,
                    efs

Ed, I searched this forum for message threads containing:

                      dbg

Found several hits that may be useful to you:

                        Hi Tom,

I am amazed, now I know why you are such a diligent contributor to this
phorum. As often as I use the search on here when I need help, it never
occured to me to search for this problem, I was convinced that I made a
typo somewhere and it migrated to other apps. As soon as I finish this
                        response I'll do a search.

                        Thanks again,
