Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Accessing CD-ROM

I need to archive several years of data yet make it accessible to the user for searches and viewing. (View only)
Putting it on CD makes the most sense since nothing will be added or changed and only a few people need access.

What is the easiest way to use a CD for this purpose with Alpha?
    Thanks
    Steve.

    RE: Accessing CD-ROM

I don't see the advantage of a CD. It's only 600-700 mb of information in a world of gigabyte disk drives. Maybe a DVD, but even there it's only 4 gig. I just bought a 120 gb hard drive for about $150.00

The CD can be removed by person A, when person B needs to use it.

The speed loss would be relatively large, although you wouldn't be accessing it much?

The usage of a 'data warehouse' might be more than anticipated.

There have been numerous discussions regarding the read only flag being set after data was copied from a cd to a disk drive and Alpha not liking that.

I'd rethink the premise that the CD is the way to go.

I'd leave the data on a disk drive and disable change, entry, and delete on the forms and browses looking at the data.

      RE: Accessing CD-ROM

      I like Al's approach.

The cd probably presents obstacles for direct access (pardon the usage of the term) with Alpha Five. While the tables (DBF files) and memo files (FPT files) could be stored there. The index (CDX) files may be difficult to 'freeze' in a read only state. Even if the CDX's can be frozen it might be feasible to build a database that resides on the hard disk, but references the tables and indices on the CD. Such a thing may have to be custom fitted for each pc, since the path to the CD may be differently named on various machines. For example, if you create it on a machine where the CD is Drive D, and then move it to a machine with 2 hard disks, or a CD and a DVD drive, the path to the data may no longer work, and therefore require modification.

Thanks guys for your input! This was something customer suggested as a way of limiting space usage on their server.

I have a couple of other ideas rattling around in the skull so I'll tip the head and see what falls out.

        Thank again!

One other piece of information that you might be interested in is if
you copy the DB to a CD-RW, (not a CD-R)the disk is readable. Although
the points made by Tom and Al are valid that you will be limited to
about 700 Mbytes. For my money, I would use an external(USB) hard
drive for storing and it can be easily moved from one machine to
          another.
