Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report sort order

    Hi Phorum,

This has to be sumpin stupid but it has me groggy right now. In the report/detail properties of a report I have a sort order expression:

    lastname+firs_nam+midinit+invert(datepaid)

of which all fields are valid. The problem is that it sorts the datepaid ascending. I am of the impression that this sort expression is for this report only but will be used every time the report is viewed or printed.
    Whattamidoinrong,

    RE: Report sort order

    Ed,

wouldn't you want the first part of the sort expression to be the date (descending), and then the name?

Anyway, I'm not sure invert(datepaid) returns a string. Is datepaid a Date type field? If so, I would think you'd want something like invert(dtos(datepaid)), wouldn't you?

      RE: Report sort order

      Hi Tom,

Wow, that is a quick response. Datepaid is a character field designated as such for other purposes. Hmmmmmm maybe datepaid first is a solution.

Thank you I'll give it a try,

        Ed:

As one Old guy to another 'REALLY Older guy'. I don't like to fool with character fields used to collect dates. As a character field you have to put so many field rules validations, etc to keep the user from entering dates wrong. If the field is a Date field, Alpha will 'police' data entry automatically to keep the process clean, making sure that the dates ar entered in proper syntax. Then, I find that date math, sorts, and conversion functions run nicely.

Just a young 'whipper-snapper' blowing off steam here.

          Hi Kenn,

The weird thing is that I use that same date field in other reports for
a sort expression and it works great.

            Ed:

I never tried any of this with a character 'date' field. I was so relieved when A5 came along and I could declare my 'Begin' and 'Endo' date prompts globally as 'Date'in an autoexec and have them in date format the whole session.

Remember in A4 they prompts always developed 'character' responses for the variables. I think that this is the one single feature I like the most about A5.

Everybody uses their own, familiar methods and I'm comfortable with mine and I'll bet that you're comfortable with yours.

Actually, the Dead Sea just had a minor case of the flu when I was in
